Primary objective
Lead the operations and sustainable management of the NT park estate by providing strategic advice, direction and support to Senior
Executive Director (SED) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on initiatives and practical action to facilitate community involvement in
sustainable park management and increased flow-on social and economic benefits.
Context statement
The branch is accountable for park operations, encompassing the comprehensive management of land and marine protected areas
(approximately 45,000 square kilometres) across the NT for conservation and nature-based recreation and tourism; as well as wildlife
operations, including protection, conservation and management of the NT's native flora and fauna, pest animal management and
management programs for saltwater crocodiles.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide quality strategic specialist and operational advice, reports and recommendations to the SED and CEO on natural resource
management, asset protection, visitor initiatives and projects.
2. Lead the operations of the parks estate to contribute to the conservation of wildlife and landscapes across the NT, delivering long-term
improvements, enhanced reputation, community involvement in sustainable park management and flow-on social and economic
benefits.
1. Work closely with the division's Executive Team to implement systems to enhance functionality and manage the infrastructure programs
for the parks estate.
1. Lead and manage the Parks and Wildlife Operations branch, including the associated financial, human and physical resources, to promote
high quality performance, improve planning processes, build capability, ensure effective outcomes and progress strategic issues.
1. Develop and maintain effective partnerships and alliances with key stakeholders to ensure consistent high quality service delivery as
well as compliance with relevant legislation.
1. Exercise delegated powers under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1976 and other relevant legislation.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Excellent professional leadership and project management skills to build effective management teams, enhanced by the ability to
translate strategic direction into day-to-day activities, promote high quality performance, improve planning, build capability and ensure
effective outcomes delivered on time and budget.
1. Highly developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and community liaison skills with demonstrated success working with
diverse partners, especially in intercultural contexts.
1. High level strategic, conceptual and analytical skills to develop and manage programs that effectively target emerging challenges and
ensure the agency and NTG can react to political, social and / or environmental changes.
1. Demonstrated experience as a senior executive delivering effective human and financial resource management with a strong
understanding of systems and practices to improve efficiency and accountability.
1. Detailed understanding of current practices in protected area management, biodiversity conservation or related discipline.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in natural resource management or related discipline.
Further information
The position is based in Alice Springs but responsible to manage parks estate and staff located throughout the NT. The occupant may be
required to travel to locations throughout the NT, including remote locations.
