The team
The Information & Data Law team sits within the Corporate Legal Services business unit in the Legal Services Group. It manages ASIC's obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) and Privacy Act 1988, and provides advice on corporate, commercial legal, and governance matters relevant to ASIC's functions and operations.
The role
As a Lawyer, you will provide legal advice on a range of information and data law issues, manage FOI requests, and ensure ASIC's compliance with privacy obligations.
Responsibilities
- Act as FOI decision maker for access requests, internal reviews, and OAIC reviews under the FOI Act.
- Provide practical, timely legal advice on privacy matters in regulatory and operational contexts.
- Design and embed privacy-by-design solutions in projects, including those involving emerging technology and data analytics.
- Guide internal teams on Privacy Impact Assessments and develop regulatory and procedural guides.
- Assess and help manage privacy breaches, including notifiable data breaches and regulatory investigations.
Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer eligible to hold an Unrestricted Legal Practising Certificate in a State or Territory of Australia.
- Approximately 5-7 years post‑admission experience relevant to information and data law.
- Strong legal advice writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Experience managing FOI and privacy matters, ideally in a government, in‑house, or law firm environment.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced setting.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
- Knowledge of the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, FOI Act, Privacy Act, and related legislation is desirable.
- High‑level analytical, organisational, and project management skills.
- Australian citizenship and willingness to complete an ASIC Suitability and Baseline Assessment.
