School Information
Merriwa Central School is a K–12 school (232 students including 52 Aboriginal students) located within a supportive community in the Upper Hunter. It caters to students from the local town and villages servicing a largely rural community. It is one of the oldest schools in the State and was one of the first National Schools established in 1850. The school is unique in that it is the only central school in the Hunter Region and one of four Central Schools in the State with separate primary and secondary campuses.
The primary enrollment of 119 students is divided into seven classes, some of which are multi‐grade. The secondary enrollment of 113 students is divided into classes by year or stage group. In 2021 a multi‐categorical support class was established at both primary and secondary campuses for students with additional support needs. In 2022 an additional support class was established in secondary with the appointment of a Head Teacher Support. The school has appointed a Deputy Principal Student Well‐Being to assist parents to navigate access to these services.
