The Privacy and Freedom of Information section is responsible for managing access to government information and ensuring the Commission's handling, use, storage, and disclosure of personal information complies with the Privacy Act 1988. This includes processing requests to access documents under Freedom of Information, ensuring personal information is handled correctly according to privacy legislation, and allowing people to request corrections to their personal information.
About the Role
The Assistant Director, Privacy supports the Director, Privacy and FOI in leading the commission's privacy management and compliance activities to ensure the protection of personal and sensitive information collected through its regulatory, complaint handling and assurance functions.
The role provides authoritative advice on privacy obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) and Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) ensuring the Commission meets its statutory responsibilities and maintains the confidence of consumers, providers and government partners.
Working with a high degree of independence and judgement, the position oversees the management of privacy risks, data breaches, and privacy impact assessments, and drives a strong culture of privacy awareness and accountability across the organisation.
Key Duties
* Support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the commission's privacy management framework, policy and procedures.
* Provide authoritative advice to the executive and staff on privacy obligations, information handling practices, and the management of privacy risks.
* Oversee the assessment, investigation and resolution of privacy incidents and data breaches, including compliance with mandatory reporting requirements to the office of the Australian information Commissioner (OAIC).
* Coordinate privacy impact assessments (PIA's) and provide strategic advice on new initiatives, programmes, and systems to ensure privacy by design.
* Deliver privacy training, awareness and capability development programmes.
* Manage relationships with key internal stakeholders, including information management, ICT security, risk, legal and complaints teams, to ensure alignment of privacy and other data governance practices.
* Engage with external agencies, including the OAIC and the Department of Health, Aged Care and Disability, on privacy related matters and compliance issues.
* Support broader integrity, governance and compliance activities, contributing to policy development, continuous improvement and risk management initiatives.
* Prepare high‑quality reports, briefings and advice for senior executives and external stakeholders.
Eligibility
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:
* Demonstrated expert knowledge of privacy legislation, Australian privacy principles and related information governance frameworks.
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex legislation and apply it pragmatically in an operational and regulatory context.
* Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex privacy concepts clearly to a variety of audiences and produce high‑quality written advice.
* Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes within tight timeframes.
* Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills, with the ability to build trust, collaborate across multiple teams and influence outcomes.
* Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to coach and mentor others and contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.
* Demonstrated integrity and sound judgement with a commitment to model the APS values and the commission's purpose and behaviours.
* Relevant professional certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), such as the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), are highly desirable and will be viewed as a strong indicator of your expertise in managing and operationalising complex privacy programmes.
Notes
* Salary offered will be between $118,588 – $135,251 per annum depending on skills and experience; in addition, 15.4% superannuation will be paid.
