Team Leader Pest Management

Mackay Regional Council is seeking a Team Leader – Pest Management to lead and coordinate the delivery of Council's pest management and biosecurity programs, ensuring compliance with legislation while protecting the environment and community.

Reporting to the Coordinator Environmental Health, you will provide leadership and technical expertise across Council's Pest Management function. This role is responsible for overseeing operations relating to invasive biosecurity matter (plants and animals), implementing Council's Biosecurity Plan, and ensuring all activities comply with relevant Acts, regulations and Council policies.

You will lead a team of Pest Management Officers, manage projects and budgets, and work closely with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective outcomes for the Mackay region.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead, mentor and manage staff within the Pest Management function
* Coordinate and oversee environmental weed and pest animal control programs
* Investigate and resolve moderately complex pest management matters
* Provide expert technical advice on biosecurity risks, obligations and enforcement
* Contribute to strategic, operational and workforce planning, including budgets and business plans
* Conduct inspections and surveillance related to biosecurity risks and development applications
* Promote biosecurity awareness through public forums and education activities
* Ensure a strong workplace health, safety and wellbeing culture

About You

You are a confident individual with strong technical knowledge of biosecurity and pest management, able to balance operational delivery with stakeholder engagement.

Essential

* Demonstrated experience (3-5 years) in pest management (biosecurity risks)
* Proven experience leading and managing a team
* Herbicide licence (Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control Regulations)
* Appropriate poisons licences and shooting licences for pest animal control
* Current QLD 'C' Class Driver Licence
* Willingness to undertake a Criminal History Check, pre-employment medical and local travel across the region
* Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with the public, stakeholders and government agencies

Desirable

* Qualification (Certificate IV or higher) in Business Leadership and Management or a related field
* Experience contributing to the development and management of operational budgets
