The Hair Educator & Mentor will deliver practical training and mentoring to young people (ages 10–24) through workshops, salon-based learning, and community programs. This role is key to empowering youth with skills in hair care, braiding, and styling, while also promoting confidence, creativity, and cultural respect.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging training workshops on:
- Hair washing, shampooing & basic care
- Braiding, cornrows & advanced hair styling
- Creative and culturally appropriate hairstyling
- Mentor and support young participants to develop confidence and skills.
- Facilitate voluntary salon placements and support learning in real workplace settings.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
- Promote Fresh Futures’ values of respect, creativity, and growth.
- Maintain workshop resources and ensure correct use of equipment.
- Adhere to workplace health and safety policies and child protection guidelines.
- Participate in program planning, evaluation, and reporting.
Selection CriteriaEssential
- Qualification and/or strong experience in hairdressing, braiding, or hair styling.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to mentor and engage young people from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to cultural respect and inclusion, particularly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
- Current Ochre Card / Working With Children Clearance (or willingness to obtain).
- Basic understanding of workplace health and safety.
Desirable
- Previous experience as a trainer, mentor, or youth worker.
- First Aid & CPR certification.
- Experience working in community or youth-focused programs.
- Knowledge of NDIS, youth engagement, or community training programs.
Employment Conditions
- Flexible hours, including workshops during weekdays, weekends, or school holidays.
- Casual or part time positions available.
- Pay rate based on skills and experience (in line with Hair & Beauty Industry Award or negotiated contract).
