The Role
The APS 6 Governance Officer is a pivotal role within the Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) Branch, providing governance coordination, assurance, and executive support to enable the effective operation of the Branch. The role supports NavySafE’s strategic and operational objectives by ensuring governance arrangements, executive workflows, and business processes are robust, compliant, and aligned with Defence policies, legislative frameworks, and accountability requirements.
Working under limited direction, the Governance Officer exercises sound judgement to manage competing priorities and resolve moderately complex governance matters, escalating higher risk, sensitive, or strategic issues as appropriate. The role works closely with the Executive Director and Section Heads to coordinate Branch wide workflows, ensuring priorities are clearly articulated, appropriately governed, monitored for progress, and delivered to a high standard within required timeframes.
A core function of the role is to support executive and senior leadership decision making through the coordination, review, and quality assurance of high quality documentation. This includes providing assurance over correspondence, briefs, submissions, reports, and governance committee papers to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment.
The Governance Officer contributes to the effective functioning of the Branch by providing governance led business support that strengthens organisational discipline, transparency, and oversight. As part of a small, integrated team, the role drives continuous improvement by enhancing governance frameworks, improving visibility of performance and risk, and streamlining workflows and business processes. Through these activities, the position plays a key role in supporting NavySafE’s accountability for the effectiveness, assurance, and maturity of Navy’s Safety and Environment Management Systems.
