Where you'll be working

The Infection Prevention Service is a district-wide service supporting health managers and clinicians to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections across all clinical environments. The service provides expert guidance and standardised best practice aligned with state and national safety requirements.

You'll be part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team including a Medical Director, Nurse Manager, Antimicrobial Physician and Pharmacist, Clinical Nurse Consultants and Specialists, Epidemiologist, and Administration staff. Executive leadership is based at the John Hunter Hospital Innovation Precinct, with practitioners located across rural and regional services.

This role will be based within a rural or regional setting, with the specific facility negotiated with the successful applicant. The position supports a wide network of Rural Referral Hospitals, District Hospitals, Community Hospitals, Multi-Purpose Services, and Community Health Services across the district. The team culture is collaborative, professional, and strongly focused on safety, innovation, and shared accountability.

About The Role

This is a newly established Nurse Practitioner / Transitional Nurse Practitioner role within the Infection Prevention Service, offering a unique opportunity to shape advanced practice across rural and regional facilities. You will work autonomously while remaining closely connected to a strong district-wide support network.

In this role, you will assess, diagnose, and manage patients within your scope of practice, including prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostics, and referring to other health professionals as required. You will provide clinical leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and advanced nursing practice, while supporting safe prescribing, de-prescribing, and evidence-based care.

You will contribute to education, governance, quality improvement, and research activities, and play a key role in mentoring clinicians and influencing practice change. Comprehensive orientation, onboarding, and ongoing clinical supervision will support your transition into the role, alongside access to education, professional networks, and senior clinical mentorship. Travel across rural and regional services is a requirement of this position.

About You

This is a senior advanced practice role suited to a Nurse Practitioner who is confident, adaptable, and motivated to make a system-wide impact in rural and regional health. You bring strong clinical judgement, leadership capability, and a commitment to safe, high-quality care.

You Will Demonstrate

Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA and current endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or, if transitional, evidence of substantial progress towards endorsement. If not endorsed, the Transitional Nurse Practitioner will be appointed temporarily (up to 3 years) to work towards endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
The equivalent of three (3) years' full-time experience in an advanced practice nursing role within the area of intended practice, within the past six (6) years from the date when the completed application seeking endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner is received by the Board.
Advanced clinical expertise in infection control, infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, emergency, primary health, or related settings
Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams and diverse environments
Strong communication, critical thinking, and workload management skills
Confidence using digital systems and supporting virtual or telehealth models of care
A calm, professional, and compassionate approach with a genuine commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement
