About the Role
AWMA Pty Ltd (AWMA) is a specialist Australian manufacturer of engineered water-control solutions, delivering complex, highly customised products for water and environmental infrastructure projects. Our strength lies in partnering with customers to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions across a diverse product range, supported by end-to-end in-house design, manufacture, testing, and delivery.
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Design & Engineering function, supporting the delivery of highly unique and complex products with a strong focus on quality and profitability.
As the only manufacturer in Australia delivering three distinct lines of engineered and customised water control mechanical products, this role requires strong engineering experience in heavy machinery, production equipment, or fabricated structures within a high-volume product delivery environment.
This is a senior, highly technical, hands-on leadership role where success is driven by a deep understanding of AWMA's specialised products and integrated design-to-manufacture approach, supported by strong engineering judgement and people leadership.
Senior technical engineers with strong leadership capability who are ready to take the next step are also encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
* Take full accountability for the engineering output of the Design & Engineering team, in line with AWMA's Production Schedule, ensuring compliance with all relevant National Standards and AWMA requirements.
* Determine, implement, and monitor engineering strategies, systems, and procedures aligned with the AWMA Integrated Management System (IMS), supporting the full lifecycle of the product from estimation, design, manufacture and installation.
* Provide technical leadership and advice on engineering methodology to meet production, quality, safety, and delivery requirements across all projects.
* Liaise with clients, consultants, and external stakeholders on technical matters, as requested by the Operations and Sales teams, with a focus on risk management and commercially sound outcomes.
* Assess current and future capability requirements and provide input into training, succession planning, and recruitment, aligned with the sales pipeline and workload forecast.
* Actively coach, mentor, and develop the Engineering and Design team to ensure capability, accountability, and continuous improvement.
* Work closely with Research & Development to support new products, concepts, and innovation, ensuring practicality, manufacturability, and commercial viability.
* Ensure strong communication and alignment between Engineering, Production, and Quality functions to minimise errors, rework, and inefficiencies.
* Review, approve, and implement all engineering changes arising on the factory floor, ensuring changes are documented and captured for future designs.
* Manage IT, engineering systems, and tools required to support the Design & Engineering team's productivity and performance.
* Perform all duties reasonably required to support the role and broader business objectives.
Working closely with Project Delivery, Sales, Manufacturing, and R&D, the Engineering Manager ensures designs are compliant, buildable, commercially sound, and aligned with AWMA's standards, production schedule, and long-term product strategy, supporting efficient manufacturing, reduced rework, and strong project margins.
About You
You are a practical, commercially aware Senior/ Senior/ Principal Engineer who enjoys technical challenges and understands that strong engineering outcomes must balance excellence, production efficiency, cost control, and risk management.
Required Skills/Experience:
* A degree in Mechanical engineering.
* Experience as a Senior or Principle Engineer in a highly specialised Product Manufacture Environment.
* Strong technical judgement with the ability to review, challenge, and approve engineering designs, calculations, and documentation.
* A commercial mindset, with an understanding of how engineering decisions impact project margins, manufacturing efficiency, delivery timelines, and rework.
* Experience working across the full project lifecycle, from early concept and estimation through to manufacturing, testing, and delivery.
* The ability to communicate clearly with engineers, production teams, project managers, and clients, translating technical detail into practical outcomes.
* A structured, systems-focused approach, with experience working within quality and management systems (IMS or similar)
AWMA product experience is highly regarded, as the Engineering Manager plays a critical role in supporting the technical delivery of our specialised product lines and ensuring design intent is effectively translated into manufacture.
