Laboratory Technician, Anatomical Pathology – Permanent Full Time positions available at Alfred Health.
Position Summary
The medical laboratory technician rotates through various sections of the Anatomical Pathology and Cytology departments at Current Footscray Hospital, working as part of a laboratory team in the processing of histology and cytology specimens. The primary responsibilities of this role are:
- Specimen reception duties including case registration, specimen distribution, organising send-away tests.
- Laboratory duties including specimen preparation, assisting at specimen cut-up, tissue processing, tissue embedding, microtomy and staining.
- Cytology specimen preparation and staining.
- Reagent preparation including Quality Control (QC) checks and record keeping, maintaining reagent inventory and laboratory supplies.
- Inward goods receiving, maintaining stocks of supplies and consumables.
- Laboratory equipment maintenance, service and calibration.
- Filing of microscope slides, paraffin blocks and patient related records.
- MDT slide preparation and documentation.
- General laboratory duties including cleaning and decontamination of laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware and work surfaces.
- Participate in rotation to the Sunshine Hospital Laboratory or Prahran as required. At New Footscray Hospital, the role will require participation in a rotating roster, Monday to Sunday between 06:30 and 18:00 hours.
About You / Qualifications
- Qualifications Required: Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory) or equivalent.
Experience And Skills
- Previous experience working in an Anatomical Pathology Laboratory.
- Cytology techniques and slide preparation.
- Previous experience with data entry.
- Able to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various Western Health and Prahran sites as needed.
