Overview
Senior Technical Officer (Kalgoorlie-based) role at Curtin University. This is a continuing (permanent), full-time position based at the Kalgoorlie Campus, supporting the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) through Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering activities.
About the Role
This role offers the opportunity to join a team dedicated to supporting teaching and research in the mining industry. It is a Monday to Friday position with no weekends, and Curtin promotes a flexible, agile work setting with a focus on work-life balance. If located outside Kalgoorlie, relocation support will be considered for the right candidate.
Your Responsibilities
Coordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratories, ensuring effective space allocation for classes and/or research projects.
Ensure operations and users of the laboratories comply with national and state legislation and university requirements.
Identify opportunities for process improvement.
Conduct safety inductions for staff and students and ensure health and safety criteria are adhered to.
Prepare materials and ensure laboratory facilities are prepared in advance for teaching and research activities.
Supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students, including guidance on experimental processes using relevant equipment.
Develop and maintain safe work procedures for all operations, including safety, hazardous substances, equipment, and workspaces.
Maintain undergraduate laboratory class procedures and workbooks in collaboration with relevant academic staff.
Maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, including safety checks, servicing and repair.
Monitor and initiate ordering of materials, consumables and equipment to ensure supplies are maintained.
Coordinate Minor New Works to provide necessary services; grant access and liaise with Security for restricted areas.
Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria:
A relevant degree in Metallurgy, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field, or substantial experience in a senior technical or laboratory role.
Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and operational requirements of a laboratory facility.
Experience in the design, conduct, and setup of complex experiments/equipment and systems.
Commitment to Occupational Safety and Health practices and regulations.
Interpersonal skills and ability to supervise others and work collaboratively as part of a team.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders and provide instruction in an educational setting.
Solutions-focused mindset with resilience and creativity in problem-solving.
Effective written communication skills to produce safety documents, correspondence, and procedures.
Desirable:
Experience in the higher education sector.
Experience in ChemAlert or ChemWatch.
First Aid certification and/or forklift license.
What We Offer
Salary: $96,323 - $102,186 (G06) per annum + Locality Allowance + 17% super. Also includes generous rental subsidy and other benefits, with flexible work arrangements and travel leave (2 days per year).
Role Requirements
Permanent work rights in Australia.
Physical fitness appropriate to the duties of the role.
Licenses or certifications relevant to the position.
National Police Clearance and background, integrity, and reference checks as required by Curtin.
