About the Branch and Team
The Constitution and Advice Team is part of the Public Law and Planning Branch at VGSO. The team's practice spans advice work and litigation. Advice work includes complex advice on the application, interpretation and development of legislation, and exclusive VGSO work such as constitutional law and Treaty. Litigation work focuses primarily on constitutional matters (usually in the High Court) and judicial review proceedings.
The Team's Subject Areas Include
* State and federal constitutional law
* The application and interpretation of legislation (including in administrative decision‐making)
* The development of legislation
* Public sector governance and integrity
* Integrity bodies and parliamentary inquiries
* Matters involving Victoria's First Peoples, including Treaty
* Judicial review of administrative decisions
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced lawyer to join our high‐performing Constitution and Advice Team. This Senior Solicitor position offers the chance to advise on complex constitutional and public law issues that have real impact, support key government clients, deliver clear and practical legal advice, and represent the State in significant litigation, including constitutional litigation and judicial review matters.
Skills and Experience
* At least 4 years of practising experience
* Knowledge and experience in administrative law, and knowledge or willingness to develop constitutional law expertise
* Ability to deliver high‐quality, authoritative written and oral legal advice tailored to client needs
* Strong understanding of and experience with statutory interpretation
* Ability to conduct complex and sensitive proceedings in state and federal courts/tribunals, or willingness to develop this skill
* Experience in judicial review proceedings is highly desirable
* Demonstrated experience in legal practice
* Enthusiasm for working in a government law office and interest in public law
* Admitted to practice law and holds (or is entitled to hold) a practising certificate
