The Department of Housing, Local Government and Corporate Development (the Department) provides support services across housing, homelands, town camps and remote communities, local government, interpreting and translation services.
Operating within the Legal, Law Reform and Freedom of Information unit, ensure the Department is effectively and efficiently fulfilling its obligations under relevant legislation, while improving Chief Executive oversight and access to legal support.
As the Senior Legal Officer you will provide general and independent in-house legal services to the Department, working collaboratively with staff from relevant housing and local government work units to ensure a whole-of-agency approach to service delivery.
In-house legal services include providing portfolio specific legal advice to business units upon request, commercial advice and contractual drafting, representing the Department in litigation and providing advice in relation to corporate governance requirements and government-specific regulatory frameworks.
This role is also responsible for case managing legal matters involving the Department that have been outsourced to external legal providers and to act as a liaison with all external legal providers including the Solicitor for the Northern Territory.
To be successful, you will have admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a practising certificate in the Northern Territory and demonstrated ability to provide legal advice on complex and diverse legal issues, as well as the ability to identify legal issues, risks and reform opportunities. You will be adept in developing legal resources and will deliver information sessions to departmental staff.
