Location: Sydney (Eastern Suburbs), NSW (occasional site visits to C&I sites)
Type: Full-time (open to contract-to-perm)
Company: Early-stage energy startup
Role Summary
We're delivering behind-the-meter electrical projects on commercial and industrial sites and need an electrical engineer to provide end-to-end engineering oversight. You'll own grid/utility interfaces where relevant, review and approve electrical documentation, and help ensure projects are buildable, compliant, and commissioning-ready.
You won't be micromanaging electricians day-to-day. You'll work with a delivery team and contractors, stepping in with technical direction, quality control, and problem-solving when needed.
What You'll Do
Grid / utility interface and approvals (where required)
* Drive connection/approval workstreams relevant to behind-the-meter projects (as applicable), coordinating inputs across internal and external stakeholders.
* Define what technical documentation is needed, manage submissions, and respond to queries.
* Maintain a clear pipeline of what's needed to progress each site/project.
Engineering review and documentation quality
* Review/redline electrical drawings and documentation produced by internal drafters and external contractors (e.g., SLDs, schematics, switchboard layouts, cable schedules, protection/earthing notes, metering layouts, commissioning/test plans).
* Identify issues early: compliance, constructability, safety-by-design, commissioning readiness, and maintainability.
* Build lightweight standards and checklists so quality is repeatable across sites.
Project oversight (hands‐on support, not field micromanagement)
* Provide technical direction across multiple C&I sites: answering questions, resolving design/site issues, and keeping decisions moving.
* Coordinate with contractors/electricians to reduce rework and unblock delivery (clear hold points, QA expectations, documentation requirements).
* Conduct occasional site visits for validation, troubleshooting, inspections/hold points, and commissioning support.
Operational support
* Help create scalable processes: documentation packs, as-builts, test results, handover requirements, and vendor coordination.
* Support procurement/spec decisions (switchgear, metering, protection equipment, etc.) based on project needs.
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
* Strong drawing review and QA process that reduces site rework and speeds commissioning.
* Consistent technical approach across C&I projects (templates, checklists, approval workflow).
* Projects move faster because technical decisions and stakeholder responses are timely and structured.
Requirements (Must-Have)
* Professional experience as an electrical engineer delivering commercial/industrial electrical projects (behind-the-meter or similar).
* Strong capability reviewing and approving electrical documentation (not just drafting).
* Practical delivery mindset: able to work effectively with contractors and solve real-world site constraints.
* Organized and accountable: able to manage multiple projects and keep stakeholders aligned.
* Clear communication—able to explain decisions to both technical and non-technical people.
Nice-to-Have (Not Required)
* Experience with BESS and/or solar (design review, commissioning, safety considerations).
* Familiarity with grid/utility application processes and stakeholder management.
* Experience with protection/earthing concepts, power quality, and commissioning/test documentation.
* Exposure to standards and compliance in Australian C&I electrical delivery.
What We Offer
* High-ownership role with direct impact across a growing project pipeline.
* Competitive salary (equity/bonus options for the right candidate).
* Flexible environment with fast decision-making and autonomy.
