As we continue to grow, we're looking for a commercially minded Legal Counsel to join our in-house legal team and partner closely with the business.
Job Description
As Legal Counsel, you will provide practical, commercially balanced legal advice across Abano's Australian and New Zealand operations. This is a broad, hands-on role where you'll work closely with senior leaders and functional teams to manage risk, enable growth, and support day-to-day operations.
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, you will build trusted relationships with the Executive Leadership Team, Regional Operations Managers, and corporate support functions.
Key areas of responsibility include:
* Advising on operational matters across the ANZ business
* Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating clinician and commercial contracts (including government contracts)
* Supporting M&A activity, joint ventures, and other commercial transactions
* Managing disputes, complaints, and regulatory matters
* Advising on privacy, compliance, and legal risk management
* Reviewing marketing materials and advising on competition and consumer law issues
Qualifications
You are a confident, pragmatic lawyer who enjoys working in a fast-paced, commercially driven environment and partnering with the business to find solutions.
You'll bring:
* 5–8 years' post-qualification experience, gained in a top or mid-tier firm or a strong in-house legal team
* Proven experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts
* Exposure to healthcare, services, or regulated environments (highly regarded)
* A sound understanding of Australian and/or New Zealand privacy law principles
* Experience with disputes, complaints handling, and regulatory matters
* Exposure to M&A or joint ventures (preferred)
* Strong communication skills and sound commercial judgement
Qualifications:
* Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent
* Admission to practice in New Zealand or another relevant jurisdiction
(Admission in Australia will be supported where required)
