The National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra is one of Australia's most highly regarded tourist attractions and educational facilities and is located in the heart of the nation's capital. The addition of Jamala Wildlife Lodge in the zoo grounds received worldwide attention and reviews, consistently enabling it to rate amongst the top animal lodges in the world. The zoo and lodge are now looking for a senior experienced and dedicated person to lead their horticultural team.
Candidates for this position must be motivated to achieve both corporate and team objectives. They will lead and direct the Horticulture team that is responsible for the ongoing care and development of the entire gardens, lawns and zoological enclosures within the facility. This is very much a hands-on position and involves establishment of new areas, along with maintenance and upgrading of existing lawns and gardens.
Applicants must possess a strong background, with a variety of horticultural skills including:
* Be a qualified and experienced horticulturist with a minimum of Cert IV in Horticulture.
* The ability to direct, oversee and motivate your team of horticulturists to maintain and develop the grounds to the highest standards
* A strong knowledge of tropical and native plant establishment and care in a climate similar to Canberra is essential, along with an extensive background in the establishment, upgrading and upkeep of significant lawn areas.
* Have experience in and be efficient with short and long term planning, as well as being capable of overseeing and managing the establishment and maintenance of vegetation in 25 hectares of gardens, lawns and zoo grounds.
* Have certificates to operate relevant machinery, preferably including chainsaw, bobcat, excavator and elevated work platform.
The zoo is continuing to expand and to upgrade existing areas. The role of Director of Horticulture involves safeguarding that our gardens and lawns continue to be centrepieces and focal points of the zoo, as well as ensuring that the horticultural staff are achieving and maintaining the high standards that have been established.
