Overview

Medtech Scientist-Engineer / Technical PM & Business Development

Location: Perth, WA (remote-friendly for the right candidate)

Company: InnovateMedtech

Type: Part-time (0.5 FTE), with strong potential to grow into full-time

InnovateMedtech is a medtech innovation studio — a one-stop shop for founders developing medical technologies. We blend business consulting with hands-on science and engineering, supporting clients from hypothesis-led experimentation through to ISO13485-compliant product development and regulatory strategy. Our projects span biosensors, wearables, and Class II/III implantable devices.

We are looking for a hands-on Scientist-Engineer / Technical Project Manager to join our growing team on a 0.5 FTE basis, with strong likelihood of expanding into full-time as projects multiply.

Role Description

This is a broad, client-facing role that combines project leadership with rigorous scientific and engineering contributions. You will manage and deliver projects across biosensors, implantable devices, wearables, materials science, chemistry, electronics, and mechanical design. A key part of this role is hypothesis-led experimentation to de-risk and advance new technologies. You will not only manage projects but also contribute directly to product development and innovation.

This role is well-suited to a recent PhD graduate with industry or consulting experience, but we also welcome applicants with a Master's degree or a Chemical Engineering background. The critical requirement is at least 2–5 years of real-world industry experience — you must understand how the real world works. Startup experience is desirable.

Key Responsibilities

* Project Leadership & Management
o Lead medtech R&D projects across diverse domains and geographies.
o Develop and manage project plans, budgets, and deliverables.
o Support business consulting and client relationship-building as part of project delivery.
o Act as a clear, proactive point of contact with clients and international partners.
* Science & Engineering Delivery
o Conduct rigorous laboratory and prototyping work.
o Apply hypothesis-driven experimentation to test, validate, and refine concepts.
o Contribute across materials science, chemistry, electronics, mechanics, and product design.
o Define project and design requirements and ensure outputs meet ISO13485-compliant standards where required.
* Collaboration & Communication
o Bridge between specialists (engineers, chemists, industrial designers, regulatory experts).
o Translate technical complexity into clear, actionable updates for clients.
o Maintain transparent, positive communication that fosters trust.
o Contribute to InnovateMedtech's positive, creative culture.

Must-Haves

* 2–5 years of industry experience (R&D, engineering consulting, product development, or medtech/related fields).
* Strong project management and organizational skills.
* Basic soldering and electronics prototyping skills.
* Experience with chemistry handling and laboratory safety.
* Familiarity with working in a chemistry lab environment.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Full working rights in Australia and a driver's license.

Desirable Skills & Attributes

* Master's or PhD in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
* Recent PhD graduates with consulting or industry experience encouraged to apply.
* Startup experience or ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
* Exposure to medical devices, biosensors, or Class II/III implantable technologies.
* Knowledge of ISO13485 and medtech regulatory pathways.
* Understanding of the Biodesign framework (highly desirable).
* CAD design experience (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).
* Hands-on maker/DIY mindset — prototyping, tinkering, and problem-solving.
* Passion for innovation, startups, and medtech challenges.
* Basic chemistry and laboratory skills, including chemical handling, pipetting, and standard lab techniques.
* Familiarity with analytical methods such as NMR, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and other micro-characterization techniques.
* Experience in materials science and characterization is highly desirable.

Why Join Innovate Medtech

You'll gain exposure to international clients across Australia, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the U.S., and be part of a positive, collaborative culture where curiosity and creativity thrive.

Eligibility

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia, and requires regular in-person work. Remote work is not available, and relocation assistance will not be provided. Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia, as visa sponsorship is not available. A current Australian driver's license is required for travel to client sites, laboratories, and subcontractors. We are seeking a long-term hire who will grow with Innovate Medtech.
