The Organisation

The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) is a non-government, feminist organisation working to eliminate sexual violence against women, young people, children and men. Our Mission is to be an active, visible catalyst for social change through the provision of high-quality services within a feminist framework.

We provide confidential counselling and support for victim survivors of sexual violence and their families who have experienced any form of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment recently or in the past, and practical support for victim survivors who have experienced childhood sexual abuse or ritual abuse, recently or many years ago.

We arrange immediate crisis appointments and provide a 24-hour crisis callout service through the Forensic & Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC) and/or Sexual Assault & Child Abuse Team (SACAT) services.

Our Crisis phone support is available from 7am until 11pm, 7 days a week.

Job Summary

The Child Counsellor (HSB) will provide specialised therapeutic interventions, counselling, advocacy, and support to children and young people exhibiting harmful sexual behaviours, as well as to their families and support networks. This role will also include working collaboratively with external agencies, contributing to case planning and coordination, and promoting awareness and education around child harmful sexual behaviours within the community.

You will be part of a professional, trauma-informed team dedicated to creating positive outcomes for children, young people, and families.

The Child Counsellor will represent CRCC in meetings, forums and events, such as community education activities particularly in areas such as trauma, therapeutic frameworks, clinical counselling and victim response.

Key Responsibilities: Decision Making and Accountability
* Apply professional knowledge and experience to deliver high-quality therapeutic outcomes for children and young people displaying harmful sexual behaviours.
* Determine the approach to individual counselling sessions within CRCC’s philosophy, values, and frameworks.
* Set priorities, monitor workflow, and manage workload independently within the broader context of the organisation.
* Work under general direction from senior employees and report to the Counsellor Program Coordinator.
Leadership
* Develop and maintain external networks and collaborative relationships with key agencies to support joint client or organisational outcomes.
* Represent CRCC in meetings, forums, and interagency collaborations relating to child harmful sexual behaviours.
* Participate in community education and training activities, particularly in areas such as trauma, therapeutic frameworks, and child sexual behaviour interventions.
* Maintain professional qualifications and participate in regular clinical supervision.
Crisis and Counselling Services
* Provide specialist counselling, information, referral, advocacy, and support services to children and young people exhibiting harmful sexual behaviours, and to their families or carers.
* Develop, coordinate, and monitor case plans, attending case conferences where appropriate.
* Deliver trauma-informed interventions tailored to the needs of each client.
* Offer information, consultation, and informal debriefing to professionals working with children in this field.
* Support families to navigate child protection, legal, and care systems.
* Contribute to education and training initiatives related to child harmful sexual behaviours.
Governance
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and reports in accordance with CRCC’s policies and procedures.
* Prepare reports for external agencies as required, including child protection, legal, or therapeutic documentation.
* Undertake administrative and ad hoc tasks as directed.

Selection Criteria
* Demonstrated experience providing counselling or therapeutic support to children, young people, and families.
* Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed practice, and harmful sexual behaviours in children.
* Ability to manage complex cases and maintain professional boundaries.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and advocacy skills.
* Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
* Work independently within a team environment, to identify priorities, meet deadlines and to manage the workload.
* Ability or experience in presenting and delivering training to professional organisations and clients.
* Ability or experience in forming relationships and partnerships with other professional organisations and in working with other organisations toward joint goals.
* Demonstrated ability to work positively in a team to promote and model collaborative and respectful staff and client relationships.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Essential Requirements

Experience of working with children, young people and their families.

Experience and training in the field of working with children and young people who have displayed harmful sexualised behaviours. Knowledge of ACT community services, child and family support systems, and interagency processes.

Qualifications
* Qualified Social Worker eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
* Qualified and Registered Psychologist
* Qualified and Registered Counsellor
