About the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman

We are the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman, National Student Ombudsman and ACT Ombudsman (the Office). The Office safeguards the community in its dealings with the Australian Government, some private sector organisations and higher education providers. The Office primarily does this by handling complaints, conducting investigations, performing audits and inspections, making recommendations and encouraging good administration

The Commonwealth Ombudsman provides assurance that agencies and entities we oversee act with integrity and treat people fairly while influencing systemic improvement in public administration.

We aim to achieve our purpose by:

* independently and impartially reviewing complaints and disclosures about government administrative action

* influencing government agencies to be accountable, lawful, fair, transparent and responsive

* providing assurance that detention facilities, law enforcement and integrity agencies are complying with legal requirements

About the role

The Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman is looking to fill a vacancy in the Finance and Property team at the APS6 level. It is an exciting time for the Office, as we undergo a period of change and growth with the introduction of this new role.

Leading a small team, this role is responsible for the delivery of all financial operations, including an expansion of the existing Travel and Expense Management System (Expense8). As a key advisor, this role forms part of the core enabling function of the Office, supporting effective service delivery to both internal and external stakeholders.

The duties of the role include but are not limited to:

* ensuring the accuracy and timely processing of supplier invoices, credit card acquittals and expense claims

* working closely with the procurement team to resolve contract matters and assist with compliance activities

* overseeing the accounts receivable and travel management functions

* overseeing all treasury functions, credit card programs and related reconciliations.

* contributing to month end processes and audit requests as required

* maintaining financial policies, providing financial advice and developing training programs as required

* contribute and support strategic business improvement opportunities including automations and simplifying policies and practices

* develop and manage project management plans for the implementation of new systems and upgrades as needed

* team leader responsibilities which may include supervising, guide team members and managing workflow

* liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure positive customer outcomes

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate is someone who has strong knowledge/experience in:

* demonstrated financial and budget experience including the ability to use TechnologyOne and travel and expense management systems

* knowledge of and experience with compliance, legislative and financial frameworks.

* strong written and communication skills including relationship building,

* resilience and adaptability

* demonstrated ability to lead the implementation of system integrations and system upgrades

* strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis, reporting and problem-solving

* strong leadership and mentoring experience, including the ability to manage a geographically dispersed team.

* professional judgement and sound decision-making, including under-pressure and contributing to help manage change
