Role Overview
The Senior Commissioning Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality testing and commissioning expertise across electrical infrastructure projects. This role provides technical leadership, supports design and project teams, and ensures commissioning activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in line with industry standards. The position plays a critical role in project delivery, contributing to successful outcomes across distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission systems while supporting team capability development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning & Technical Delivery
* Review design and project scope to assess constructability, efficiency, and technical suitability
* Lead testing and commissioning of primary and secondary systems using approved procedures and documentation
* Develop and approve commissioning methodologies, plans, FAT/SAT documentation, and test reports
* Provide technical guidance and training to engineers, technicians, and field personnel
* Ensure compliance with relevant standards, specifications, and internal processes
* Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to support effective project execution
* Identify opportunities to improve testing procedures, tools, and technologies
Project Delivery & Coordination
* Lead commissioning activities across multiple projects, including managing internal teams and subcontractors
* Develop commissioning strategies, including outage planning, staging, and risk mitigation
* Monitor project progress and performance, ensuring delivery against time, cost, and quality targets
* Support project estimation and provide technical input during planning and execution phases
* Promote and enforce strong safety, health, and environmental practices
Leadership & Capability Development
* Provide mentorship and technical leadership to commissioning and construction teams
* Support the development of commissioning standards, procedures, and best practices
* Contribute to building a high-performing, collaborative team culture
* Guide teams in solving complex technical challenges and making informed decisions
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
* Drive the adoption of new technologies, tools, and commissioning practices
* Identify cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and project delivery
* Maintain awareness of industry trends, standards, and emerging technologies
Requirements
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
* Professional engineering accreditation (preferred)
* Additional qualifications in power systems (advantageous)
Technical Expertise
* Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution networks
* Expertise in protection systems, control systems, and commissioning principles
* Experience with IEC-61850 and modern digital substations
* Proficiency with relay configuration tools (e.g. SEL, Siemens, GE, ABB)
* Experience with primary and secondary testing equipment (e.g. Omicron, Doble)
Experience
* 10+ years' experience in commissioning of electrical infrastructure
* Proven experience leading commissioning activities on complex projects
* Strong background in high-voltage equipment testing (transformers, switchgear, etc.)
* Experience in FAT/SAT coordination and execution
* Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
