We are seeking a reporter to join the Editorial team to provide general news coverage for Guardian Australia. This role is being offered on a 12 months fixed-term basis, working on a seven-day roster with weekend work, early starts and late finishes. This role is open to candidates based in either Sydney or Melbourne.
In this role you will...
* Pitch daily news ideas
* Write news stories, features and explainers as commissioned by newsdesk
* Run the daily news live blog when required
* Contribute to audio and video coverage to complement text publication
* Make contacts and develop stories in particular areas of interest
* Engage with social media to promote stories and source information
You'll bring....
Knowledge
* At least three to five years' reporting experience in a fast-changing and high-pressure news environment, preferably digital
* Substantial experience of writing news and short features to deadlines
* Good understanding of media law
* Familiarity and ease with social media
* Video and audio experience would be an advantage
* Experience of court reporting would be an advantage
* An interest in a specialist story area or areas would be an advantage, particularly if not currently covered in depth by Guardian Australia
Skills
* A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
* Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal skills
* Ability to deal with the stresses associated with tight deadlines
* Strong news sense and ability to generate fresh ideas
* Ability to multitask
* Organised team player
* Open to challenge and correction
* Understanding of, and commitment to, the Guardian's values: honesty, integrity, courage, fairness, and a sense of duty to the reader and the community
