Sydney Law School is now inviting applications for the Colin Phegan Lectureship, a 3-year fixed term L ecturer (Teaching and Research) Level B role focused on law and technology, to enable applicants to join a community of internationally recognised researchers and outstanding teachers at one of the world’s leading places to study law. Introduced thanks to the generous support of the Yim Family Foundation, the Colin Phegan Lectureship offers a unique opportunity for a talented researcher of law and technology to advance their career in teaching and research by helping to build capability among Sydney Law School staff and students to adapt to the rapid evolution of legal practice. The Colin Phegan Lecturer will be responsible for engaging, with the support and mentorship of field-leading colleagues, in the development of innovative curricula and teaching resources to familiarise LLB and JD students with generative AI and/or other automated tools being deployed in legal practice, while equipping students with critical literacy regarding these tools’ limits and risks and possible trajectories of their further development and deployment. By accelerating Sydney Law School’s thoughtful embedding of AI and automation into its core teaching and learning practice, the person appointed to this exciting role will enjoy an opportunity to have a groundbreaking impact on legal education. At the same time, the Colin Phegan Lecturer will be supported to advance their research careers, including through involvement in the multidisciplinary Centre for AI, Trust and Governance. Your key responsibilities will be to: Engage in high-quality teaching and learning across one or more core LLB/JD units, meeting the University’s expectations and standards for education Develop and deliver practice-based modules that embed AI and/or machine learning within core curricula, employing tools being deployed in legal practice in Australia and/or abroad Undertake excellent, original research in law and technology to advance knowledge and understanding in this field and communicate and disseminate this research through respected channels nationally and internationally, articulating the applications and implications of this work for society Engage in scholarly conversations in the law and technology field and participate in research collaborations to create impact, including contributing to applications for external research funding Design and collaborate with others to develop innovative approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment that build students’ capabilities for critical co-reasoning with AI and automated tools alongside fundamental legal reasoning Evaluate teaching and learning effectiveness for continuous improvement, using evidence-informed methods and feedback Build and maintain relationships with others (e.g. other universities, communities, government, and industry partners) to support the creation of opportunities for future research in your field and to inform curriculum development and create authentic learning opportunities Participate in communities of practice or other forms of collegial support and development. Contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled About you A PhD (or near completion) in or relevant to the field of law and technology, and/or the law, policy and ethics of AI and/or machine learning Evidence of high-quality, peer-reviewed research appropriate to the discipline, with an upward trajectory and a promising research agenda A record of securing competitive external research funding (or clear potential commensurate with career stage) Experience supervising students’ honours or independent research projects and/or HDR students, and supporting or mentoring colleagues and coordinating team activities Strong, developing networks with academic, industry and professional partners and stakeholders Demonstrated excellence in teaching into core law school curricula at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels (e.g., lectures, tutorials, skills-based teaching) Proven capability in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives and modules, including assessment Ability to engage students and foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment, evidenced by positive student and peer/supervisor feedback Ability to work collaboratively with academic and professional staff and champion equity, diversity and inclusion Pre-employment checks Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University.
