The University of Technology Sydney is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level B) to play a key role in the development of bio-based materials through formulation and design–fabrication integration. The role is embedded within the 'Build it Green' research program and will join a dynamic and collaborative cross-disciplinary team spanning design, science and engineering.
This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for two years, offering an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to help shape sustainable material solutions for design, architecture and the built environment.
Key responsibilities
* Undertake experimental bio-based formulation work; plan and conduct material experiments and fabrication trials.
* Perform materials characterisation (e.g., mechanical screening, thermal behaviour, flammability indicators, dimensional stability) and maintain validated protocols (i.e. Standard Operating Procedures) for repeatability and scale readiness.
* Develop and maintain computational design workflows (e.g., parametric modelling) that link directly to fabrication toolpaths and manufacturing strategies.
* Contribute to publications, exhibitions and industry showcases.
* Participate in industry engagement and awareness initiatives.
* Collaborate on research grant development and contribute to project reporting for stakeholders, including funders, industry partners, and government.
* Support junior researchers and research assistants by modelling good studio and laboratory practice, digital fabrication fundamentals, and ensuring reproducible workflows.
About you
* PhD (or equivalent research doctorate) in a relevant field such as Design/Architecture, Mechanical/Manufacturing/Materials Engineering, or Material Science.
* Knowledge of biogenic/bio‐based materials (e.g., algae‐derived or comparable bio‐polymers or composites) and novel formulation principles.
* Demonstrated proficiency with advanced fabrication technologies (e.g. robotics, 3D printing) including end‐to‐end workflow from digital model to prototype.
* Demonstrated proficiency in computational design and programming (e.g., Rhino/Grasshopper; Python and/or CAD/CAM plugins).
* Experience working in cross‐disciplinary teams and the ability to deliver on research milestones as part of multiple work packages.
Base Salary Range
$125,240 - $148,229 p.a. (Level B)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
This position is full-time and an appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for two years.
