About the Program
The Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program (BHTSP) is supported by a joint Australian and Queensland government commitment of $9 billion (80:20 funding). The initiative aims to reduce crash severity and frequency on the Bruce Highway between Gympie and Cairns through measures such as wide centre line treatments, audio tactile line marking, intersection upgrades, rest areas, pavement strengthening, overtaking lanes, and upgrades to narrow structures, with completion targeted by 2030. This builds on more than $6 billion in planned investment under the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) 2024-25 to 2027-28. Project prioritisation will be guided by the Bruce Highway Advisory Council and both levels of government, with a corridor-wide fatigue management strategy informing rest area and stopping place upgrades.
