About the OFWO

The Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman (OFWO) is an independent statutory office established by the Fair Work Act 2009. Our functions outline the responsibilities we have as set by the Fair Work Act and other legislation to achieve our purpose:

  • provide education, assistance, advice and guidance to employers, employees, outworkers, outworker entities and organisations
  • promote and monitor compliance with workplace laws
  • inquire into and investigate breaches of the Fair Work Act

About the Team

The Legal and Specialist Advice Branch provides specialised advice and content on workplace rights and responsibilities. The Pay Tools team proactively maintains our pay tools, including the pay and conditions tool (PACT), pay guides and historical pay rates, and ensures they remain up to date, including by leading and coordinating the FWO's response to the Annual Wage Review Decision. The Pay Tools team uses a number of IT systems to maintain and update the information available through our pay tools, including Oracle Intelligent Advisor.

Typical Duties

  • Lead and manage the geographically dispersed Pay Tools team to deliver quality pay tools services
  • Build team capability through coaching, performance feedback, conflict resolution and encouraging career development
  • Lead and manage the continuous improvement of pay tools processes and systems, including by responding to pay tools feedback and enquiries, developing functionality changes to enhance the customer experience and testing and conducting quality assurance in respect of functionality and system changes
  • Work effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders with respect to maintaining the pay tools, including technical experts (workplace relations and contemporary award knowledge) and information technology personnel
  • Use your detailed knowledge of Australia's workplace relations system to support the Pay Tools team to analyse awards and award variation decisions and to write user‐friendly rules to ensure PACT remains up to date
  • Lead the planning and implementation of complex and/or high‐profile changes to the pay tools in response to Fair Work Commission decisions, including the Annual Wage Review, other court or tribunal decisions or because of legislative change
  • Contribute to the achievement of the broader Legal and Specialist Advice Branch functions, as required

Selection Criteria

  • Proven ability to lead and manage a geographically dispersed team, including experience in building team capability, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, and delivering high quality outcomes within tight timeframes
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to manage competing demands and to identify and mitigate risk
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a range of IT programs and systems, as well as the ability to quickly become proficient in new programs and systems. Experience developing rule bases in Oracle Intelligent Advisor in a government, policy or financial environment is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and concise manner
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
