The role of Operator involves the safe and competent operation of a variety of Council plant and equipment. This position plays a key part in the delivery of Council's infrastructure maintenance and construction works, ensuring all tasks are completed to recognised industry quality standards. While the role may, at times, be primarily focused on plant operation, the Operator is also expected to develop and demonstrate practical skills across a range of civil construction activities. Duties are not limited to plant operation and will include participating in both construction and maintenance functions within the Works Department as required.

General Salary Information
These positions are classified as Level 4C under the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream B) Certified Agreement. The salary is $66,003 per annum plus superannuation, or $33.4025 per hour.

You bring practical experience operating civil plant and equipment and are willing to assist across a variety of construction and maintenance activities. You work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly, and are comfortable performing physically demanding outdoor work. A strong focus on safety, reliability, and following procedures is essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Operate a variety of plant and machinery, including Backhoe, Roller, Loader, Skid Steer Loader, Excavator, and other municipal equipment.
* Perform routine inspections, servicing, and minor repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation.
* Assist with a range of civil construction and maintenance tasks, including roadworks, drainage, footpaths, and other infrastructure duties.
* Carry out manual labour such as concreting, asphalting, site preparation, and basic traffic management duties.
* Comply with all relevant WHS and environmental regulations, identify hazards, and implement appropriate control measures.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Applicants must be able to safely and competently carry out strenuous labouring and manual handling activities. The position requires physical tasks including manual handling, repetitive bending, kneeling, twisting and/or squatting, lifting, working in confined spaces, and working at heights.
Key Selection Criteria
Mandatory
* Demonstrated experience in the basic routine maintenance and safe operation of plant as an Operator within Local Government or the civil construction industry.
* Current White Card (General Construction Induction).
* Current certificate of competency to operate a variety of plant and machinery, including Backhoe, Roller, Loader, Skid Steer Loader, Excavator, and other municipal equipment.
* Demonstrated physical ability necessary to undertake manual handling and labouring for extended periods in direct sunlight and/or inclement weather conditions.
* Current Queensland "HR" Class drivers licence or equivalent.
* Ability to provide feedback/status updates verbally, in writing, or electronically, or the willingness to receive training for this.
* Ability to work safely and productively under limited general supervision.
Desirable
* Certificate III in Civil Construction (Plant Operations) or willingness to obtain.
* Demonstrated experience in form‐setting and concreting activities.
* Competent in traffic control and traffic management implementation, or willingness to obtain.
