The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Prison Supervisor to provide a critical role at Western Plains Correctional Centre.

About The Business Unit

Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of Corrections Victoria and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities.

Western Plains provides a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to individualised care which motivates, encourages and promotes reintegration into the community. Western Plains has advanced technology which improves security, streamlines operations and enhances connections for the people in our care.

Western Plains operates with three primary service teams: Workforce and Prison Services, Communities, and Safety and Operational Service which collaboratively deliver comprehensive services for people in our care, safety management, and corporate services. Through its innovative design and service model, Western Plains aims to create a thriving environment conducive to safety and positive behavioural change.

About The Role

The Prison Supervisor manages the day-to-day functional needs of accommodation and/or security areas. They will be responsible for managing a team of custodial and non-custodial officers delivering a range of correctional services for which they will require strong people management skills. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff. With highly developed communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills the Prison Supervisor leads and manages staff to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment.

This multifaceted role encompasses human resource management, including performance management, coaching, and developing staff, understanding of OH&S requirements, compliance with legislative responsibilities, recruitment and training requirements and budget monitoring.

A Prison Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to offender management and security management. They actively lead working parties and reference groups, take responsibility for additional portfolios, participate in prisoner forums or committees, and provide advice through written reports to senior management.

As a leader, Prison Supervisors role model self-respect and respect for others. They provide leadership and coaching to staff, helping to equip them with the skills needed to work effectively with prisoners and deliver best practice in security service. They lead by example with the Sector values and actively contribute towards creating and sustaining a positive and healthy workforce culture built on solid values, professional excellence and teamwork.

Prison Supervisors may also be required to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays and attend to urgent work as required. Appropriate remuneration will be applied for the above in accordance with the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2024.

Some Of Your Duties Will Include
* Lead and manage staff to ensure the safety and security of people in custody, staff, and visitors. This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff for compliance with safety procedures.
* Actively apply and monitor the dynamic security foundation principles to promote a safe and secure prison environment by influencing direction on a range of service processes and systems to support the compliance of established standards and mandated requirements.
* Direct and supervise teams conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security equipment, investigating, collating, and preparing reports, management of critical incidents and emergency management procedures.
* Identify operational and service delivery deficiencies and develop and implement strategic solutions, in conjunction with the Operations Manager.
* Maintain a healthy and safe workplace by acting immediately upon the receipt of any bullying, discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, or inappropriate behaviour complaint, report, or observation.
About You
* Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a correctional environment.
* Demonstrated commitment to working with staff, prisoners, and other service providers in the delivery of an integrated, whole of Justice approach to reducing re-offending.
Qualifications/requirements
* Prior to commencement you will be required to obtain a current Statement of Attainment for the First Aid unit HLTAIDO11 Provide First Aid.
* A full and current Victorian driver's licence or a minimum P2 driver's licence.
* Completion of the Prison Officer Pre-service Training or a willingness to undertake and complete the provided Prison Officer Pre-Service Training is required.
* Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) or similar is desirable.
* Certificate IV Training and Assessment is desirable.
