An opportunity has arisen for an experienced
Senior Legal Counsel
to provide strategic counsel on data governance and the ethical use of artificial intelligence within a complex corporate environment. This role is central to supporting enterprise-wide data management strategies, shaping governance frameworks, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory and ethical standards.
The Role
Reporting to the Head of Legal – Data, Privacy and AI Governance, the Senior Legal Counsel will deliver expert legal advice across data governance, AI governance, privacy, technology and intellectual property. The role will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to identify and manage legal risk, influence policy development, monitor regulatory developments and contribute to continual improvement in corporate conduct, compliance and culture.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expert legal advice on data governance and AI governance frameworks, supporting the development and implementation of organisation-wide data governance strategies.
* Assess and manage legal, regulatory and commercial risks associated with data usage, AI applications, information technology, privacy and intellectual property.
* Conduct legal research and analysis on emerging legislative and regulatory developments affecting data governance, AI, privacy and technology.
* Participate in investigations and responses to legal issues involving data or AI and assist in developing risk mitigation strategies.
* Liaise with regulators and external stakeholders on compliance, governance and reporting matters relating to data and AI.
* Deliver timely and practical legal advice on IT, data, privacy and IP matters, guiding business decision-making within an appropriate risk framework.
* Monitor and, where appropriate, influence changes in applicable laws and regulatory standards, preparing the organisation for potential impacts.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accountable and compliant data and AI practices across the business.
* Provide training and guidance to employees on data and AI governance obligations and best practice.
* Support continuous improvement initiatives in corporate conduct, compliance and culture, and assist in guiding less experienced legal team members on IT, data, privacy and AI matters.
* Meet diversity and inclusion, health and safety, customer, and risk and compliance responsibilities as required.
About You
* Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and a current Australian practising certificate.
* Admission as a barrister and solicitor of a State or Territory Supreme Court.
* Minimum 7 years' PQE, including at least 5 years' experience in data governance and demonstrable knowledge of AI governance law.
* Strong understanding of Australian privacy law (including the Privacy Act 1988) and global data governance and AI regulatory frameworks.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
* Detail-oriented with strong organisational skills.
* Experience in the insurance or financial services sector is advantageous.
* Commitment to continuous process improvement, including leveraging AI and technology.
