The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill Senior Cloud Engineer roles in our Technology and Security Division (TSD).
A competitive remuneration package may be negotiated for the successful candidates based on qualifications, skills, and experience.
About the roles
You will join as a Senior Cloud Engineer in the SADE (Scaled Analytical Data Environment) Platform team to design, implement, operate and continuously improve the ABS's modern AWS-based data lake platform that supports critical statistical production (including programs such as Big Data Timely Insights Phase 2 (BDTI2) and the Census). The role reports to the Director, SADE Platform Operations.
Key responsibilities
* Engineer platform capabilities: build and automate SADE infrastructure using AWS native services and Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, CDK).
* Develop services & tooling: create and maintain platform components, services and automations in Python and/or TypeScript to support data lake operations.
* Operate at scale: enhance and run existing workloads for reliability, performance, cost efficiency and compliance, driving continuous improvement.
* Monitor & support: respond to alerts, troubleshoot incidents, and elevate complex issues when required.
* Enable delivery teams: guide solution teams building on SADE—providing advice on platform services, patterns and best practices.
* Architect & plan: work with Cloud Architects on solution designs and contribute to the platform roadmap.
* Govern & document: maintain operational readiness through clear documentation, reporting, and governance activities.
* Collaborate broadly: partner across platform, infrastructure, security and solution delivery teams to achieve shared outcomes.
What we are looking for (selection criteria)
* demonstrated knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and architecture, including troubleshooting & engineering solutions
* DevOps proficiency and experience with CI/CD tools, primarily GitLab & JIRA
* advanced knowledge of high-level programming languages TypeScript and/or Python for cloud native development and CI/CD automation
* high level proficiency in Bash and/or Powershell for scripting and orchestration of workloads across hybrid environments
* ability to identify and apply cyber security best practices to developed solutions
* strong automation first mindset: experience using Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks, such as AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK, and applying automation and orchestration patterns across AWS services, including Lambda, Step Functions, and Glue, to streamline operations, reduce manual effort, and deliver value for both technical and business teams
* skilled communicator working in multi-disciplinary teams and with diverse stakeholders, with the ability to document and promote designs to technical and non-technical audiences
* demonstrated leadership and inclusion by working effectively with engineering teams, collaborating on designs, shared decisions, and planning the work program.
