About the role
We’re looking for an experienced financial reporting professional to step into an EL1 Assistant Director role within a busy government finance team. You’ll lead financial accounting and reporting activities, provide technical advice, and support senior leaders with clear, reliable financial information. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys combining technical accounting expertise with people leadership and stakeholder engagement.
An initial 12-month non-ongoing APS contract or temporary s26 transfer (for ongoing APS employees) is on offer. This role is based in Canberra, ACT and flexible working arrangements will be supported on a case-by-case basis.
Please note: only Australian citizens with a minimum Baseline security clearance can be considered for this role.
Duties:
* Lead financial accounting and reporting, including internal and external financial statements.
* Manage taxation obligations (including GST and FBT) and investment and treasury functions.
* Provide technical advice on accounting standards, policy, legislation and financial systems.
* Research and resolve complex accounting issues and support continuous improvement.
* Contribute to month-end processes, executive financial reporting and variance analysis.
* Support budgeting, asset reporting and business planning activities.
* Lead, coach and develop staff within the financial reporting function.
* Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Requisite skills/qualifications:
* A relevant degree (such as accounting, commerce or business) and CPA and/or CA qualification.
* Strong experience in financial reporting, audits, taxation and financial operations.
* Knowledge of the Australian Government financial framework and public sector accounting.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly.
* Proven experience leading people and working collaboratively with stakeholders.
* Experience using financial management information systems (XLOne highly regarded).
