About The Job SPS is looking for a passionate, hardworking field technician to join our team in a casual role with the potential to progress into full-time. The ideal candidate will enjoy working outdoors, have a genuine interest in agriculture and cropping, and be committed to safety and teamwork. The position is in Southern Tasmania operating out of Richmond.

Key Responsibilities

* Working as part of a team with other field staff to ensure correct crop management practices are performed such as trimming to adjust for flower timing, weed control, transplanting and harvest in consultation with Field Officers.
* Assist with all the physical operations needed to ensure the production of high quality vegetable seed.
* Work collaboratively with field staff to record and document processes.

Such operations include:


* Crop rogueing. Rogueing for possible physical contaminants and outcross problems.
* Operating company machinery in a safe and efficient manner (Side by side for spraying and application of slug pellets)
* Crop monitoring/ scouting production fields for Rutherglen bug, soil moisture, disease and maturity sampling.
* Assisting SPS field and its research partners in the implementation and processing of trials.
* Harvest operations including harvest operator support, clean-downs and machinery transport.
* Adjustment of crop flowering by trimming.
* Knap sacking crops for weed control.
* Sampling of seed lots, performing purity tests and assisting in packing of cleaned seed at TSD and Hazelwood's.
* Working under direction of SPS Field Staff and at times with limited supervision, perform duties as directed in conjunction with the team, and work with established priorities for field maintenance activities to ensure the best use of time and resources.
* Recognise that the Casual Field Assistants role requires a flexible approach to work period such as harvesting and planting and that you may be required including weekends and public holidays if deemed necessary.

Recognise that South Pacific Seeds operates throughout Australia and periods of stay away from your home base may be required for short periods of time.

About You If you possess the following attributes, we would like to hear from you

* Genuine passion for crops and agriculture
* Must be comfortable working chemicals
* High level of attention to detail, record keeping and safety awareness
* Able to work flexible hours
* Willingness to learn – on-the-job training provided
* Capable of working both independently and as part of a team
* Experience operating tractors and other farm machinery
* MR truck license and forklift license are an advantage, or willingness to obtain
* Chemical handling certificate an advantage
* First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
