The Rockhampton Grammar School is seeking to employ a Science Laboratory Technician Assistant who will contribute to the provision of a quality educational service by assisting and supporting the preparation and enhancement of science equipment, experiments and learning materials.

POSITION TITLE:
Science Laboratory Technician Assistant

REPORTS TO:
Head of Department (Science)
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is to provide assistance to maintain the efficient running of the department. The role will further provide ongoing support to the Head of Department, Teachers and Laboratory Technician and involve a passion for working with young people. The position requires working productively with general supervision and includes being punctual.
You will have responsibility for the following activities and delivery of the following key tasks:
* Assist with the management and stocktaking of equipment and resources;
* Communicate effectively and display a high level of interpersonal skills to function as an effective team member;
* Display respect and empathy for students with high level needs;
* Display confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families;
* General housekeeping in the laboratory, including the cleaning of glassware;
* Assist students with collecting supplies for experiments as required from stores;
* Assist with the construction, testing and design of equipment and methodology required for practical and student experiments;
* Prepare low risk chemical solutions;
* Understand legal and safety considerations when storing, labelling and disposing of chemicals;
* Delivery to and return from classrooms equipment required for lessons;
* Filing;
* Printing of class lists, room timetables, etc;
* Arranging quotations and writing orders;
* Taking delivery of stocks of materials and equipment;
* Collect purchased materials from local suppliers using the School vehicle;
* Duplicate/photocopy teaching materials;
* Collation and copying of exam papers;
* Assist in organising off-site activities;
* Assist in the supervision of education activities, under the direction of a teacher;
* Assist in preparing, sorting, making available and cleaning away teaching equipment and materials;
* Care for, check and maintain equipment;
* Assist teachers and students with supporting activities and with School excursions;
* Any other administrative duties as required by the Head of Department or Laboratory Technician.
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
* Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Power Point;
* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
* Previous laboratory experience will be advantageous;
* Sound knowledge of general scientific equipment and the ability to maintain the equipment and laboratory in a clean and workable order.
REQUIRED LICENCES/CERTIFICATES
* Working with Children Check;
* Police Check;
* Previous training and/or experience in handling chemicals;
* Qualification in laboratory/scientific related areas, desirable but not essential;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The successful applicant will be subject to a "Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check" where applicable. The School undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children and young people in its care. This includes reference checks, identity checks qualification check and professional registration checks.
