Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM) is seeking an experienced HR & Compliance Manager to join our independent bilingual Primary School. Become part of our passionate team and help shape the growth of our school.

About the school

DSM delivers German-English bilingual and a dual curricular education for students. The vision for children at DSM is to grow up learning two languages at the same time, and preparing them to become involved citizens of the world. Established 17 years ago, DSM offers bilingual Primary School education from Foundation Year to Grade 6 with classes taught both in English and German. The school currently has 170 students and a team of 25 teachers and educators and six education support staff which is continuously growing. Working at our bilingual school means joining a vibrant, internationally minded community built on a well-established and respected educational approach. Our aim for the future is to continue the strong growth and ultimately extend our educational offer to a Secondary School program based on the International Baccalaureate (IB).

About the opportunity

The HR & Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring the school operates in a safe, compliant, and high‐performing environment by embedding strong people practices and risk‐aware behaviours into everyday operations.

This role integrates people and compliance disciplines to support leaders to effectively manage staff, uphold regulatory obligations, and foster a culture aligned with the school's values.

Key Responsibilities – Human Resources

* Determine, implement, monitor, review and evaluate human resource management strategies,policies, processes and plans to meet business needs
* Manage and actively deliver end‐to‐end recruitment processes, including advertising, shortlisting, interviewing, selection, appointment, and onboarding of staff (local and international)
* Plan and carry out employee well‐being and recognition initiatives
* Design and deliver training and guidance to build capability in people management, risk awareness, compliance obligations
* Assist with payroll and contract management
* Monitor and ensure the school's compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including those related to education standards, student safety, and privacy
* Lead policy development, implementation and communication
* Ensure policies are consistently understood and applied across the school, driving change management activities where necessary
* Conduct ongoing, effective compliance training
* Ensure appropriate maintenance and documentation of risk & compliance data
* Conduct compliance and risk assessments, prepare incident reports and mitigation plans
* Establish processes for investigating and analysing data with respect to reportable incidents

Selection criteria

* Academic qualification in a relevant field
* 3+ years of experience in a similar role
* Knowledge of the Australian labour and employment laws (including Awards, NES, and union environment)
* Demonstrated practical experience in a similar role
* Understanding of risk & compliance programs and systems, with experience in the education sector highly regarded
* A basic working knowledge of relevant legislation
* Alignment with our values: respect, kindness, honesty and integrity
* Fluency in German highly regarded
* Ideally, the role holder has lived and worked in different cultural environments
