As a Civil Engineering Team Leader, you’ll guide a small team of engineers delivering assessments of civil infrastructure within development applications. This includes ensuring infrastructure is designed in line with City Plan and relevant standards, and supporting efficient, high-quality decision-making.

This role provides the opportunity to grow your leadership skills while contributing to significant development projects across the city. You’ll engage in both technical oversight and small team people leadership, making a real difference in shaping the City’s future.

About the team

City Development is responsible for the management and assessment of development applications, developer contributions, planning appeals, research, and the provision of expert planning, building, and technical advice.

Within City Development, the Engineering and Landscape Assessment (E&LA) Business Unit is responsible for the assessment of operational work applications (detailed designs) and for providing specialist advice on engineering and landscape matters in the context of development applications. E&LA works closely with colleagues in planning, infrastructure, and asset management to ensure well-informed decision-making.

The E&LA Business Unit provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals on development applications and to contribute to shaping the City’s future through expert technical assessments and advice.

About the role

As the Civil Engineering Team Leader, you will play a key leadership role in shaping the City’s infrastructure through effective assessment of development applications. Leading a team of Engineers and Senior Engineers, you will oversee daily operations, provide technical leadership, and drive the delivery of high-quality, consistent engineering assessments that meet legislative and City standards. Your focus will be on proactive, solutions-focused outcomes that align with City policies and engineering guidelines.

In this role, you will coach and mentor your team, manage timelines, and support complex application assessments. You will be empowered to drive technical excellence, ensuring assessments are delivered efficiently, with a strong emphasis on quality and consistency. You will also play a key part in fostering collaboration with internal stakeholders, development industry partners, and government agencies to achieve integrated decision-making and sustainable development outcomes.

This role presents an opportunity to lead with purpose, influence the City’s development, and contribute to the delivery of resilient and well-planned infrastructure that supports community growth and enhances the liveability of the City.

Your key responsibilities will include:

* Lead and support a small team of Engineers and Senior Engineers, proactively managing and overseeing the distribution of workloads and overseeing the delivery of timely, high-quality engineering assessments for development applications.
* Review and endorse engineering assessments and provide technical guidance and strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment with City Plan, legislative frameworks, and industry standards.
* Provide technical mentorship and guidance to team members, supporting their professional growth and development.
* Assist with the assessment of complex development applications and contribute to and endorse strategic prelodgement advice to ensure consistency is maintained.
* Facilitate regular team meetings and one-on-one discussions to proactively monitor progress, address challenges, and maintain alignment with expectations.
* Promote a solutions-focused culture within the team by encouraging innovation, accountability, and clear communication.
* Collaborate with the Coordinator and other team leaders to ensure consistency across teams, support strategic initiatives, and escalate critical or complex matters as needed.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and industry professionals to enable integrated and informed decision-making.

In keeping with the City’s commitment to flexible working, we are open to exploring flexible work arrangements that help balance life and work commitments while delivering high-quality outcomes.

We’re looking for people who have:

* Consistently deliver high-quality service to both internal and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on collaboration, customer outcomes, and practical, solution-oriented advice.
* Demonstrate leadership, organisation, and staff management skills, with the ability to guide team performance and support professional growth.
* Have experience in a senior engineering role, ideally with leadership/mentorship responsibilities. Demonstrate strong technical capability in civil engineering design or assessment. Are skilled communicators who can confidently lead, mentor, and collaborate across teams.
* Understand and can apply relevant engineering standards, planning schemes, and legislation. Are adaptable and proactive, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
* Maintain a constructive and professional attitude toward feedback and continuous improvement, contributing to a positive, high-performing team culture.
* Hold a Bachelor Degree in Engineering or equivalent knowledge.
