Are you passionate about using your lived experience to make a real difference in the lives of others? Do you believe that empathy, understanding, and hope can transform how people experience mental health support? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
At the Crisis Support Space (CSS), we provide a safe, welcoming, and compassionate alternative to the clinical hospital environment for people experiencing mental health challenges or crises — including those having thoughts of suicide. Located alongside the Emergency Department, CSS offers a non-clinical, peer-led space that focuses on connection, safety, and understanding during times of distress.
As a peer-led service, the primary function of CSS is to offer support grounded in lived experience. Recovery Mentors play a lead role in consumer engagement and support, drawing on evidence-based, lived experience frameworks to foster hope, empowerment, and recovery. Through empathy, understanding, and shared experience, Recovery Mentors help individuals feel heard, valued, and supported on their path toward wellbeing.
As a Recovery Mentor, you’ll bring the unique power of lived experience to your work. You’ll walk alongside individuals on their recovery journey, share stories of hope, and offer practical strategies that support wellbeing. Your insights and empathy will help create a space where people feel seen, heard, and empowered.
Together, we can create a space where hope grows, healing begins, and recovery is possible.
Recovery Mentors work across a rotating roster that aligns with the service’s operational hours.
- Monday to Friday: 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm
- Saturday and Sunday (AM): 7:30 am – 3:30 pm
- Saturday and Sunday (PM): 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Provide recovery-focused, peer-based support to individuals experiencing mental health distress or crisis.
- Model recovery and resilience by appropriately sharing your lived experience to inspire hope and connection.
- Collaborate with clinical and community partners to ensure holistic, person-centred care.
- Contribute to creating a safe, compassionate, and respectful environment that promotes wellbeing and recovery.
You Will Have:
- The position requires the incumbent to have Lived Experience of mental illness, either as a consumer or a carer.
- Certificate IV in Mental Health and/or relevant experience.
- A genuine commitment to peer support principles, empathy, and person-centred care.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport.
- The ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and maintain professional boundaries.
- A willingness to engage in ongoing supervision and professional development to strengthen your practice.
