Child Protection Counselling Service (CPCS) Overview

The Child Protection Counselling Service (CPCS) position represents a significant opportunity to create meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of vulnerable children, young people, and families. The role exists to provide trauma‐informed, evidence‐based therapeutic intervention for individuals affected by child abuse, neglect, and family violence, ensuring access to specialised support during periods of substantial vulnerability and distress.

At its core, the position delivers comprehensive assessment, counselling, and case coordination for clients referred through statutory child protection pathways. By providing timely therapeutic responses, the CPCS actively promotes safety, stability, and wellbeing for children at risk and enhances child safety while supporting psychological healing for children and families impacted by trauma.

Through thorough clinical assessment and ongoing risk monitoring, the role enhances child safety, supports psychological healing, and contributes to the development of safer, more nurturing family environments. Collaborative work ensures integrated care in partnership with child protection services, education providers, health teams, and community organisations.

Are You the Right Fit?

The ideal candidate for the CPCS role brings strong clinical skills, experience working with trauma, and a commitment to improving safety and wellbeing for vulnerable children and families. Key capabilities include the ability to conduct comprehensive assessments, deliver evidence‐based therapeutic interventions, and manage risk within a child protection framework.

Success requires effective communication, the capacity to build rapport with clients, collabora‐tion with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies, and experience in trauma‐informed practice, child protection, family violence, or work with vulnerable populations. The role suits an individual who demonstrates emotional resilience, sound professional judgement, strong organisational skills, and dedication to reflective practice and ongoing learning. A commitment to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and ethically grounded care is essential.

* Social Work degree providing eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or full registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, including completion of a four‐year accredited undergraduate sequence in psychology or equivalent overseas.
* Demonstrated extensive experience supervising and leading staff and team performance, in a challenging and demanding work environment.
* Demonstrated knowledge and skills in service management functions and change management.
* Demonstrated leadership and experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating local service delivery incorporating quality improvement processes, ensuring evidence‐based practice in service planning and evaluation.

* High level of understanding of the issues related to children, young people and adults affected by violence, abuse and neglect, and the Children and Young People's Care and Protection Act.
* Applicants must possess an Australian C‐class driver's licence (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C‐class licence from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C‐class licence within three months of appointment. Learner's licences are not permitted.
