First Nations Student Support Youth Worker (Identified Role)
Youth Off The Streets is a not-for-profit youth organisation that provides safety, support and opportunities for young people to build a positive future. We offer crisis accommodation and housing services, alternative high school education, alcohol and other drugs counselling, youth justice support, life skills and employment programs, cultural support and community engagement, among other services. We focus on early interventions that empower young people and strengthen communities.
Not all children and young people thrive in mainstream schools. Our registered and accredited independent high schools offer a flexible alternative for students in Years 9–12.
We operate six independent high schools that are registered and accredited with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Youth Off The Streets is also a member of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW).
About the role:
This unique role is located at our independent high school in Wollongong on a fulltime maximum term basis until Jan 2027 with the potential to continue after this date. The role will provide positive youth engagement in innovative education by assisting Young People from all backgrounds develop their capacity to take responsibility for their lives in line with the program vision & mission.
It will also provide culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the school as well as assisting with implementing culturally appropriate teaching strategies and activities that encourage leadership and provide opportunity to further study or employment.
Experience, Skills and Abilities:
* Demonstrated networking ability with knowledge of community development issues
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating confidence in engaging young people
* Ability to build supportive relationships with students and families within the school
* Understanding of the needs of First Nations children and young people
* Understanding of adolescent development, drug use and behaviour
* Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles that underpin a child safe organisation including mandatory child protection procedures
* Additional skills in outdoor recreation, performing arts, creative arts, sport, fitness or other extra curricula activities are desirable qualities
* Maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times
* Strong commitment to professional boundaries and relationships
Requirements:
* Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be able to provide a certificate of Aboriginality
* Experience working in the youth sector and/or education setting
* Experience working with or in First Nations communities
* Current employment working with children check & a recent police check
* Full Australian working rights
