Overview

We are looking to recruit an innovative and enthusiastic Band 7 Psychologist for our Medium Secure Service for men. Applicants should have experience working within a relevant setting, such as forensic and/or rehab, and feel passionately about making a difference in the lives of service users. The post holder will be embedded within a particular ward MDT based at John Howard Centre, Homerton.

The successful applicant would join a dynamic psychology department in the forensic directorate that covers medium and low security, learning disability, and community services. The department maintains close links to academic institutions, including regional Clinical Psychology training courses. There are many excellent CPD opportunities including facilitating CAT-informed reflective practice, teaching and training opportunities, and a wide range of specialist supervision that includes neuropsychologists.

Main duties of the job
* Providing a specialist psychology service to inpatients on a particular ward, that will include specialist psychological assessments and interventions.
* To offer a trauma-informed perspective in developing management plans and informing patient care from a psychological perspective.
* To offer consultations to non-psychology colleagues, and to develop, deliver and evaluate specialist group programmes.
* To utilise research skills for audit, service development and research projects.
* To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the department's objectives.
* To supervise the work of assistant psychologists, students, or trainees as required.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

* Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychology, or equivalent qualification such as Statement of Equivalence, leading to eligibility for Chartered status
* Depending on training needs, may hold a professional qualification in psychology and be undertaking further training to complete requirements for a Statement of Equivalence

Desirable

* Pre-qualification training in a relevant field of applied psychology

Experience

* Essential: Experience of providing specialist psychological assessments and treatment interventions to patients with complex problems
* Essential: Experience of working with a variety of patients reflecting a wide range of clinical severity
* Desirable: Experience of working in a range of care settings, including outpatient, inpatient and community
* Desirable: Experience of teaching, training, and/or supervision
* Desirable: Experience of working in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters
* Desirable: Pre-qualification experience of working in a forensic specialism

Knowledge and Skills

* Essential: Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment
* Essential: Skills in delivering psychological interventions in individual and/or group formats, adapted to meet the needs of the individual or group
* Essential: Skills in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
* Essential: Skills in providing advice and consultation to other professionals and carers
* Essential: Ability to use multi-media presentation materials

Desirable

* Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult-to-treat groups (complex needs, personality disorder, dual diagnosis, substance misuse, offending)
* Knowledge of the evidence base for psychological interventions with the forensic client group
* Knowledge of the theory and practice of CBT and one other specialised psychological therapy
* Ability to use advanced IT packages
* Awareness of diversity, and ability to provide a service that is appropriate to a diverse range of people
