Primary objective

The Transition Assistant Director-North and the Transition Assistant Director-South provides strategic direction and

coordination of transition services across all remote and very remote schools in the Top End and Central Australian region

of the Northern Territory (NT) to ensure successful transition to enrolment in appropriate schooling options in the secondary

years.

Context statement

Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) provides evidence-based differentiated services and support to preschools and schools

to maximise outcomes for Territory children and young people. Our services encompass quality teaching and learning,

national and systemic assessment, transition to boarding school support and policy coordination. TLS also plays a strategic

role in implementing government priorities, offering expert advice to the Education Minister and the department's senior

executives. We enhance our work by actively engaging with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure best outcomes for all

of our clients.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide high level strategic and policy advice to government and the education sector on the development,

implementation and management of programs and strategies that support the remote Indigenous students who have

transitioned to and are commencing secondary education in boarding schools across the Northern Territory and interstate

1. Lead the provision of high-level advice and assistance to schools and communities on their responsibilities regarding the

support of students and their parents working towards participation in a successful educational experience in secondary

schooling

1. Manage the implementation and ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of programs and strategies that

improve remote student engagement in residential boarding

1. Oversee the collection of data and development of reports to key stakeholders on issues that impact on the continuing

successful development and operation of remote student transition to secondary pathways

1. Lead the facilitation, coordination and delivery of support to boarding schools hosting students from remote Indigenous

communities, in relation to developing culturally appropriate attendance support strategies

1. Develop and implement strategic policies and initiatives to maximise the effectiveness of the transition of remote

community students throughout the NT

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Extensive knowledge of contemporary best practice in the implementation and team management of transition support

programs in urban, rural and remote Indigenous environments.

2. High level understanding of education issues and sensitivities, as well as service delivery issues in urban, rural and remote

Indigenous communities.

3. A demonstrated understanding of the complexities of providing an integrated support service in urban, rural and remote

Indigenous environments.

4. An understanding of cultural sensitivities and needs in planning education support services.

Desirable

1. Degree in Education and /or Teaching or social science field

2. Knowledge of Department of Education and Training policies and protocols.

Further information

The selected applicant must hold a current NT Working with Children Notice (Ochre Card) and driver's licence or the ability

to obtain prior to commencement and be willing to travel remotely by 4WD and in light aircraft. This position requires staying

overnight in remote communities.
