About The Role

As a Retail Solutions Engineer in Australia, you’ll break down technical barriers and guide high-growth, high-volume, and complex retailers on how to accelerate their business with Shopify. You’ll consult on omnichannel strategies, retail operations, and commerce technology stacks—showing merchants how to best leverage the Shopify retail platform and ecosystem.

You’re a tinkerer at heart: comfortable reading and writing code to prototype, test, and troubleshoot, without needing to be a full-time software engineer. You’ll use AI copilots (e.g., Claude) to scaffold PoCs, explore APIs, generate test data, summarise logs, and draft documentation—pairing speed with sound judgment and verification.

As a subject-matter expert on Shopify Retail (POS, online, mobile, hardware) and the broader Shopify platform, you’ll advise on best practices for complex integrations and set merchants up for long-term success. You’ll represent Shopify with kindness and clarity, serve as a trusted advisor, and bring insights back to Product, Engineering, and Revenue.

This role includes merchant-facing activities, including remote and on-site sessions, discovery workshops, and community events. You’ll primarily support ANZ merchants while partnering across APAC. It’s a small, high-impact team—so proactivity, ownership, and the ability to get stuff done with minimal guidance are essential. This position reports to the APAC Solutions Engineering Lead.

Requirements for the role

- 3–5+ years in Retail, B2B, or commerce-related pre-sales solutions engineering (or adjacent roles such as retail tech consulting, POS/OMS implementation, or solutions architecture).
- Strong understanding of modern retail and omnichannel operations (e.g., store workflows, inventory/receiving, BOPIS/Click & Collect, Ship-from-Store, returns/exchanges, payments, hardware rollouts, and change management).
- Familiarity with the ANZ/APAC retail ecosystem (payments, tax, logistics/carriers, ERP/OMS/WMS, loyalty/CRM, clienteling, marketplaces).
- Comfort “tinkering” with technology: building scrappy prototypes, writing sample code, and exploring APIs. Practical experience with:
- Web APIs (GraphQL/REST), JSON, webhooks
- Lightweight coding/scripting (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript or Python), HTML/CSS
- Tools like Git/GitHub, Postman/Insomnia, command line
- Not required to be a full-time developer; able to build PoCs and debug effectively.
- Practical fluency with AI tools and workflows with a readiness to adopt internal AI tooling.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills with a bias to action and the ability to GSD in ambiguous situations.
- Enterprise-level communication skills: can translate complex technical concepts into clear business value for executive and technical stakeholders.
- Mindset of curiosity, experimentation, continuous learning, and teaching—balanced with kindness, empathy, and care for merchants and teammates.
- Experience with platform migrations to Shopify (or other platforms) and knowledge of integration patterns (middleware, event-driven, batch vs real-time).
- Strong time management and prioritisation skills across multiple concurrent merchants and projects in a fast-paced environment.

Your responsibilities

- Partner with sales to shape opportunities, run discovery, and align solutions to merchant goals and intended outcomes.
- Advise merchants and their development partners on architectures, integrations, and best practices to maximise retail success on Shopify.
- Create and deliver impactful demos and proofs of concept (both live and virtual), including hands-on prototypes that showcase end-to-end flows.
- Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude and internal tooling) to speed up discovery analysis, PoC development, test data creation, troubleshooting, and documentation—while verifying outputs for accuracy and security.
- Lead technical deep-dives and whiteboarding sessions; handle API inquiries and guide creative development on the Shopify platform.
- Diagnose issues across POS, online, and integrations; own follow-through to resolution with minimal guidance.
- Mentor sales teammates on Shopify’s technical elements—and share AI best practices to elevate team productivity.
- Act as a trusted advisor to merchants and partners; bring transparent, actionable feedback to Product and Engineering to influence the roadmap.
- Engage with ecosystem partners (payments, logistics, retail apps) to strengthen solutions and gather market insights.
- Share best practices within the Retail team and contribute to internal tooling, docs, prompt libraries, and repeatable assets for scale.
- Collaborate closely with all Crafts internally to ensure seamless handoffs and long-term merchant outcomes.
- Participate in remote and on-site merchant engagements across ANZ (and broader APAC as needed).
