About the role
NAAJA's Criminal Law Practice is dynamic, fast-paced and highly rewarding. It includes youth, summary, indictable and appellate crime work, supported by a dedicated team of administrative and client service staff.
As a Criminal Lawyer, you will:
* Represent clients before the Local Court and Supreme Court in mentions, hearings, trials, pleas and appeals.
* Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
* Travel to remote communities and undertake work on circuit courts (including overnight stays).
* Identify systemic issues that cause disadvantage and contribute to NAAJA's law reform and advocacy work.
* Work collaboratively as part of a committed legal team, supporting colleagues and engaging with community service staff.
This role requires energy, motivation and a strong commitment to criminal law and social justice.
About you
We are looking for a lawyer who is passionate about criminal law and dedicated to improving justice outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
You will bring:
* Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the NT.
* Knowledge of criminal law and an interest in developing expertise in this area.
* Understanding of the disproportionate involvement of Aboriginal people in the justice system, and cultural sensitivity when working with Aboriginal communities.
* Excellent communication skills, particularly cross-cultural communication.
* Strong time management and organisational skills to manage high workloads under pressure.
* Willingness to travel and work in regional and remote communities.
* Ability to work effectively in a diverse legal team and take guidance on cultural matters from Client Service Officers.
* Computer literacy, including use of email, reporting, and scheduling systems.
* Current driver's licence, Ochre Card (or ability to obtain), and a satisfactory criminal history check.
