RETRIEVAL MEDICINE - ADVANCED TRAINEE (AUGUST 2026 START)
LISMORE BASE HOSPITAL, WESTPAC RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE
An exciting opportunity is available at Lismore Base Hospital for an Advanced Trainee in Retrieval Medicine position
from August 2026
for a period of six months. The successful applicant will provide high quality critical care to acutely ill and injured patients, both in the prehospital environment and during inter-hospital transfers with the retrieval service. They will gain valuable experience working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians as part of the Lismore Base Hospital and Westpac Helicopter Retrieval Base, working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians.
Accreditation:
Lismore Base Hospital (Richmond Network) is accredited for 36 months of Trainee Stage 1-3 time, 6 months Trainee Stage 4 (Lismore ED), and 6 months Trainee Stage 4 (non-ED Retrieval) or 3 months Trainee Stage 4 non-ED Medical Education. Our department offers opportunities to rotate to ACEM accredited terms in Anaesthetics, ICU, Medical Education, Ultrasound and Retrieval.
Training Stage 4 (TS4):
Trainees will have the opportunities to fulfil leadership roles within the department whilst having access to supervision and support from FACEMs. TS4 trainees will contribute to a range of education activities within Emergency Medicine and the hospital. Trainees will be provided non clinical time to undertake education, quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
Education:
We offer weekly education sessions, facilitated by Dr Martin Duffy (ACEM Educator of the year 2021), including simulation, clinical skills, case reviews, and buddy shifts with FACEM. SRMOs are supported by EMET Lismore Hub providing access to multiple workshops including paediatric emergencies, procedural skills, ultrasound and airway management. LBH also supports trainees with funding external education activities including Alfred Health Emergency Procedures Course and ACEM Diploma of Pre Hospital and Retrieval Medicine.
Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service. The hospital is an acute referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (41,000 presentations annually & 55 beds/treatment spaces), 12 bed ICU and 6 bed Coronary Care Unit. The department includes modern facilities such as a 4 bed resuscitation and procedure bay, acute zone, an ED short stay unit (EDSSU), fast tract and medical imaging services. LBH ED also supports Richmond Network hospitals including Ballina District Hospital and Casino Memorial District Hospital, and Multipurpose Centres located at Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo.
Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter. From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.
What You'll Be Doing
Providing high quality critical care to acutely ill and injured patients, both in the prehospital environment and during inter-hospital transfers with the Retrieval Service.
Ensuring clear and effective communication among the aeromedical crew, the Aeromedical Control Centre and the referring and receiving medical staff.
During the term, trainees will be encouraged to attain the Associateship in Pre-Hospital and Emergency Medicine through the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
* MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
* A minimum of three (3) full years of postgraduate experience, including satisfactory completion of at least twelve (12) months of Provisional Training under the ACEM training program. Please demonstrate experience
* Demonstrated ability to competently care for critically ill and injured patients in the prehospital and out-of-hospital environment with minimal resources and backup
* Proven ability to perform duties competently, both physically and psychologically, in the prehospital and interhospital environments, helicopter winching experience would be an advantage but is not a prerequisite
* Proven ability to safely adapt clinical practice to the environment
* Demonstrated superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate concisely, diplomatically and effectively with a variety of health and non-health professionals
* Proven ability to comply with organisational policy and procedures, especially those related clinical governance and to safety
* Valid unrestricted drivers' licence for use in NSW/Australia and willingness to travel in the course of employment and willingness and capacity to participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day, evening or night shifts across a seven day roster; participate in an after-hours roster including nights and weekends.
