Offer description

*EL1 Assistant Director, Strategic Communications*A federal government agency is seeking an experienced EL1 Assistant Director, Strategic Communications to provide strategic and practical communications leadership to a specialist division managing complex, high‑profile national work.

This newly created role is embedded within the specialist integrity division of a federal government agency, and you will work closely with senior leaders on complex, high‑profile matters, while reporting directly to the Director of Strategic Communications. It offers a mix of strategic planning and practical, multi‑channel delivery in a fast‑paced setting.

This non‑ongoing opportunity is offered as a six‑month contract or temporary Section 26 transfer, with potential for extension. The role is Canberra‑based and offers flexible working arrangements, with a minimum of two days in the office each week.

**About the Role****

This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned EL1 communications leader who enjoys both big‑picture strategy and practical delivery.

You will lead and produce high‑quality communications that support provider integrity initiatives, regulatory engagement, and education activities across large and diverse audiences — including health providers, partner organisations and community stakeholders.

The communications environment is dynamic, risk‑aware and closely connected to compliance, stakeholder confidence and public trust. The role requires strong judgement, excellent writing skills and the ability to translate complex policy and regulatory issues into clear, accessible and well‑targeted messaging.

You will contribute to whole‑of‑agency communication priorities and work within a supportive team culture known for collaboration, low turnover and an engaged, people‑focused environment.

**Key Responsibilities****

* Lead the development and implementation of strategic communication plans and products for high‑priority projects and initiatives
* Produce high‑quality content across multiple channels (e.g., web, social, email, provider updates, presentations)
* Use you highly developed written and communication skills to negotiate and communicate with influence
* Develop accessible messaging that explains complex compliance, billing and integrity concepts
* Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across government, regulatory and service provider environments
* Contribute to team management activities, reporting, planning and strategic alignment
* Support events, launches, presentations and engagement activities as required

**About You*

You are an experienced senior communications professional who brings sound judgement, excellent writing skills and confidence operating in a government or regulated public‑sector environment. You will bring:***

* Demonstrated experience in strategic communications within government
* Strong writing and editing capability, with the ability to distil complex and sensitive issues
* Experience managing competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment
* Ability to provide high‑quality advice to senior stakeholders
* Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship‑building skills
* Experience across multiple communication platforms, including web, social and direct stakeholder communication
* A collaborative working style — someone who leads with influence, not ego
* Experience with health, integrity, regulatory or compliance‑related content is welcome but not essential

**Eligibility****To be eligible, you must:

* Be an Australian citizen
* Be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance

This role offers the opportunity to shape meaningful, high‑impact communications that support the integrity of services accessed by hundreds of thousands of Australians, while contributing to a collaborative and high‑performing communications team.
