The Principal Geologist provides technical leadership across Grade Control, Mine Exploration, and Mineral Resources, working in close collaboration with Mine Engineering, Drill & Blast, and Operations. The Principal Geologist ensures full compliance with RGM Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards and plays a key role in expanding Rosebel's resources and reserves through effective grade control, near-mine exploration, and geological modeling.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Ore / Grade Control
* Provide technical leadership to the Grade Control team for RC and blast hole sampling.
* Optimize ore/waste delineation and minimize dilution through best mining practices.
* Review blast patterns and ore control models (packet modeling).
* Validate end-of-month Mine and Mill production figures.
* Lead monthly reconciliation reviews and interpretation of results.
* Conduct annual reviews of production block model parameters, including variography and capping.
* Maintain continuous coordination with Drill & Blast, Mine Operations, and Mine Engineering teams.
2. Mine Exploration
* Provide technical oversight of data collection, logging, and geological interpretation.
* Develop and review a rolling 5-year near-mine exploration strategy to support resource expansion.
* Review and approve near-mine drilling campaigns, including infill and expansion drilling.
* Ensure QA/QC standards are applied and validated prior to geological and resource modeling.
3. Mineral Resource Modeling
* Ensure timely delivery of drilling data, geological models, and resource models to meet corporate deadlines.
* Review, validate, and approve geological models developed on site.
* Review and validate resource models and official reserve statements, whether produced internally or by consultants.
* Maintain close collaboration with short- and long-term mine planning teams to incorporate new geological results into mine designs.
4. Leadership, Budget & Compliance
* Ensure all departmental and contractor activities comply with RGM Health & Safety policies and standards.
* Demonstrate visible and proactive HSE leadership.
* Prepare annual departmental budgets and provide quarterly forecasts.
* Monitor departmental expenditure and ensure costs remain within approved budgets.
* Lead technical training programs to build local workforce capability.
* Develop and implement succession plans for critical technical and leadership roles within the department.
The ideal candidate will have:
* Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geosciences or related field
* Registered (or ability to obtain registration) within an appropriate professional organization
* Minimum 10 years' experience in Mining Operations, Exploration, and Resource modeling.
* Good knowledge of the following software: Excel, Access, Leapfrog and Minesight.
* Willingness to work in Brokopondo and Paramaribo on a rotational schedule of 14 days of work followed by 7 days break
* A copy ID & a valid proof of good conduct "Bewijs goedgedrag"
* Good communication and interpersonal skills in English.
