Job Description Payroll Officer Employment Type: Full time permanent opportunity Location: Sydney, NSW with initial training in Canberra for 6-8 weeks (1 week per fortnight in Canberra) Annual Salary: Salary dependent on skills and experience Citizenship requirements: Must have full Australian working rights ABOUT THE ROLE A growing multi-site retail organisation is seeking an experienced Payroll Officer to manage end-to-end payroll operations across multiple entities.
Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will ensure accurate, timely and compliant payroll processing for a workforce consisting of full-time, part-time and casual employees.
This role is ideal for someone with strong payroll knowledge, high attention to detail, and proven experience interpreting retail awards.
You will play an important part in maintaining payroll data integrity, supporting financial reporting, managing statutory obligations, and contributing to process improvements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Process end-to-end payroll on a regular pay cycle across multiple retail entities.
Interpret relevant retail awards to ensure correct pay rates, allowances, penalties and entitlements.
Maintain accurate payroll records including employee details, classification levels, pay rates and leave balances.
Track and manage employee entitlements (annual leave, long service leave, leave loading, adjustments, etc.).
Process new hires and terminations including onboarding documentation, final pays, leave payouts, PAYG and superannuation.
Calculate and lodge payroll tax, PAYG withholding, superannuation contributions and other statutory requirements.
Assist with workers' compensation and insurance-related payroll documentation.
Prepare payroll reconciliations, journals and support month-end reporting.
Respond to payroll queries from employees and managers in a timely and professional manner.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Essential: Demonstrated experience in full-cycle payroll processing within a multi-site or multi-entity environment (retail/hospitality highly regarded).
Strong understanding of payroll obligations including tax, superannuation, PAYG, entitlements and terminations.
Experience with award interpretation, ideally including retail industry awards.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with payroll/accounting systems.
High level of accuracy, attention to detail and data management.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to liaise across all levels of the business.
Desirable: Experience with cloud-based payroll and rostering systems (e.g., Xero, Deputy).
Understanding of payroll reconciliations and integration with finance functions.
Previous experience in retail or another high-volume environment.
Experience performing balance sheet reconciliations .
