Truck Mechanic / Heavy Vehicle Mechanic – Job Description
Position Summary The Truck Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy vehicles such as trucks, trailers, buses, and commercial fleet vehicles. This role ensures all vehicles operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards. Duties include performing inspections, identifying mechanical faults, conducting repairs, and completing scheduled maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
* Vehicle Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
o Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on heavy vehicles.
o Use diagnostic tools, scan equipment, and technical manuals to identify faults.
o Test drive vehicles to confirm issues and verify repairs.
o Repair engines, transmissions, clutches, braking systems, suspension, steering, cooling systems, and drivetrains.
o Perform scheduled servicing, oil changes, filter replacements, and safety inspections.
o Replace worn or damaged components such as belts, hoses, bearings, seals, and wiring.
* Inspections & Compliance
o Conduct roadworthy and pre-trip inspections.
o Ensure vehicles meet safety, emissions, and regulatory standards.
o Complete inspection reports and maintenance documentation accurately.
* Workshop Operations
o Operate workshop tools including hoists, torque wrenches, diagnostic devices, hydraulic presses, and welding equipment (if qualified).
o Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
o Manage parts inventory and request replacement parts as needed.
* Safety & Risk Management
o Follow all workshop safety procedures and use proper PPE.
o Adhere to lock-out/tag-out processes when working on critical systems.
* Communication & Reporting
o Document repairs, service history, and parts used using job cards or maintenance software.
o Communicate repair needs and equipment concerns to supervisors or fleet managers.
o Provide recommendations for improving vehicle reliability and performance.
Required Qualifications
* Trade qualification or certification in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, or Automotive Technology.
* Proven experience working with heavy trucks, trailers, or commercial fleet vehicles.
* Ability to read service manuals, technical diagrams, and diagnostic reports.
* Valid driver's license (Heavy Vehicle licence preferred).
* Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
* Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic brakes, and electrical systems.
* Ability to use diagnostic and testing equipment.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
* Physically fit and capable of handling heavy components.
* Workshops, truck depots, transport yards, or field service environments.
* May require shift work, overtime, or on-call duties.
* Work may involve exposure to noise, grease, oils, and outdoor conditions.
