About the organisation

The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago, supporting them in protecting their cultural heritage, managing land and sea, and advancing their social and economic aspirations. Established in 1991, the ALC works to enhance the rights, interests, and self-determination of the Anindilyakwa people, fostering pathways for youth to thrive in both traditional and modern worlds.

Guided by its vision to protect culture, invest in a self-sufficient future, and promote unity, the ALC upholds values of One People One Family, Our Future, Respect, Honesty, Pride, and Listening. As an independent statutory authority, the ALC plays a pivotal role in advocating for Traditional Owners and delivering sustainable outcomes across the Groote Archipelago region.

About the role

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the ALC provides strategic and operational leadership to the organisation, ensuring it fulfills its statutory obligations under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the other relevant legislation. Reporting directly to the ALC Board, the CEO leads the development and implementation of innovative strategies that preserve Anindilyakwa culture, drive sustainable economic development, and protect the environment.

This position is more than a leadership role – it requires an unwavering commitment to living on Groote Eylandt and becoming an integral part of the community. Living on Groote Eylandt is non-negotiable.The CEO must actively engage with and work alongside the Anindilyakwa people, embracing the unique cultural identity of the Groote Archipelago and embedding community priorities into all facets of the organisation.

A key expectation of this role is a commitment tomentoring an Anindilyakwa person to become the next CEOat the end of the successful candidate’s tenure.The CEO will foster a TO-centric approach across all operations, overseeing multidisciplinary teams and facilitating a transition to a post-mining Future Groote economy. This role requires a visionary leader with a commitment to cultural integrity, governance excellence, and delivering tangible outcomes for the Anindilyakwa people.

Essential Capabilities

1. Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary organisations in culturally sensitive environments.

2. Demonstrated experience in strategic planning to achieve economic and cultural outcomes.

3. Deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, governance, and Traditional Owner perspectives.

4. Strong skills in building partnerships with government, private sector, and community stakeholders.

5. Expertise in financial management, statutory compliance, and organisational governance.

6. Experience managing infrastructure projects and operational portfolios.

7. Commitment to fostering culturally safe workplaces, supporting staff development, and mentoring senior leaders to build leadership capacity.

1. Postgraduate qualifications in Business, Public Administration, or a related field.

2. Familiarity with the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976 and Native Title Act 1993.

3. Experience in mining, environmental management, or Indigenous policy sectors.
