Practice Information
This Medical Centre is a 5-doctor practice.
They are a mixed private and bulk-billing practice and have been operating for over 13 years with modern medical equipment and state-of-the-art technology.
The Practice Principal is an adjunct JCU lecturer, PEP tutor and an accredited GMT registrar training supervisor.
They are a training practice with dedicated protected teaching sessions once a week for TheirGPs.
The clinic is in the centre of town, 1.5 km from the hospital and 2 km from the main shopping centre.
A pathology and a dental clinic are located beside the clinic.
They also have a visiting allied health team, including a Tele-Psychologist/Psychiatrist, Exercise Physiologist, Diabetic Educator, Gynaecologist, Optometrist, Mental health nurse and Audiologist who see patients at the clinic.
There is a full-time Practice Manager on site every day and four nurses who assist the doctors in running the Chronic Disease Clinic.
The Medical Centre has a dedicated Skin Clinic with a HD MoleMax system and is an allocated Covid vaccination clinic.
Main clientele include young people, retirees, mine workers and travelers, with the Bruce Highway passing through the township.
They offer family medicine covering broad general practice and occupational health, and have the right to private practice at Sarina Hospital.
Referrals are made to the base hospital.
The practice is equipped for Telehealth Conferences and has a dedicated telehealth room.
Sarina is a closely knit community with strong community support; doctors maintain good relationships with patients.
Occasional health awareness seminars are held for the community.
Sarina has a small rural hospital with 16 beds and an aged care facility.
Most referrals are managed by Mackay Base Hospital and private hospitals in the region.
The practice hosts visiting specialists and has a pathology collection centre and a full-time Medical Imaging Centre including ultrasound/echo facilities.
Sarina is supported by NQPHN, which assists GPs with allied health coordination, CME workshops, and meetings.
About Sarina
Sarina is a rural town with a population of approximately 15,000 people, located 35 km south of Mackay.
It is surrounded by five beaches offering access to recreation, boating, and fishing.
The Whitsunday Islands are north and accessible for Great Barrier Reef viewing.
The town has a public high school, a state and a Catholic private primary school, and family day-care services.
Children travel to private high schools in Mackay, with bus services available for workers and students.
There are two coal export facilities about 10 km away.
Sarina features a sugar mill and an alcohol distillery, as well as dairy, cattle grazing, tropical fruit growing, horticulture, aquaculture, fishing and tourism.
The climate is very tropical.
Daily flights operate between Mackay and Brisbane and other nearby cities.
Opportunities for family, spouse and partner work are greater in Mackay and the neighboring mines.
Position Description
The practice offers a full-time GP position from a single practice location, remunerated as a percentage of the doctor's gross billings.
The doctor works weekday morning and afternoon sessions (approximately 8 hours per day) with a potential optional weekday afternoon off; Saturday work is a 1:4 rotation.
Some procedural skills such as minor operations (skin excisions, curettes, biopsies) are advantageous but not mandatory; supervision and training will be provided.
The practice also cares for nursing home and palliative care patients.
Patient load is approximately 150 per week.
After Hours:The clinic opens on Saturdays, and doctors work a 1:4 Saturday rotation.
Very minimal after-hours load as Sarina Hospital handles after-hours emergencies.
