About the role
* Are you passionate about suicide prevention?
* Do you have your own personal lived experience accessing services while in suicidal crisis?
* Do you have experience and qualifications in providing mental health peer support?
* Do you want to be part of a peer led service that provides a safe environment as an alternative to Emergency Departments for people in crisis?
The Penrith Safe Haven is one of the suicide prevention services delivered under the Towards Zero Suicides in Care Initiatives in NSW. In Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District our Safe Haven operated seven days a week and is co-located with the Penrith Medical Mental Health Service.
Our Safe Haven aims to reduce deaths by suicide and suicide attempts by providing a walk in service delivered by mental health peer workers with their own lived experience around suicidal distress. Safe Haven provides responsive and trauma informed care in a warm, home like environment for people at risk of suicide 7 days a week and outside of business hours. Peer Support Workers are integral members of the team and draw on their personal lived experience of recovery from suicidality to provide authentic engagement and instil confidence and hope about the journey of recovery. We are seeking peer workers to build a casual pool for the Penrith Safe Haven to work across a 7 days roster for approximately 1-2 shifts per month, with the possibility of more depending on experience, availability and service needs. Safe Haven is accessible 7 days per week from 1:30 – 10pm, except Tuesday when we open 1:30 – 5pm. Safe Haven guests may self present, be referred by schools, doctors and other health professionals and there is no referral needed or costs to receive support. In addition to supporting people experiencing suicidal crisis we also aim provide an alternative to presenting to the Emergency Department, which evidence shows can be a loud, busy and difficult environment for people experiencing a mental health crisis.
