Unique opportunity to lead an agency in the transformation of the regulation of the cemeteries and crematoria sector in NSW Temporary/fixed-term full-time role available for up to five years Role based in Parramatta with flexible working supported TRP from $299,666 to $335,820 including superannuation, commensurate with experience Are you passionate about leading regulatory excellence? Do you want to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the cemeteries and crematoria sector in NSW? Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW (CCNSW) is leading the transformation of the regulation of the cemeteries and crematoria sector in NSW. The vision is to ensure that current and future generations have equitable and affordable access to interment services, including burial, and that interment practices and beliefs of all religious and cultural groups are respected. As the Chief Executive Officer, this is a rare and exciting opportunity to lead an energised and customer focused agency tasked with delivering on an ambitious suite of reforms. CCNSW is charged with implementing a newly commenced licensing scheme – a first in Australia – building a robust compliance capability to protect customers and communities, and developing future policy and regulation to ensure a sustainable and customer focused future for the sector. CCNSW will also play an important role in providing strategic direction and support to the sector and stakeholders as they navigate emerging customer preferences, new technologies and opportunities to maximise the value of cemeteries as public spaces in line with community needs and expectations. About the role From 1 July 2025, the Chief Executive Officer is an independent statutory officer, appointed by the Governor of New South Wales on the recommendation of the Minister for Lands and Property. With a strong authorising environment and after much recent progress, the new Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for taking CCNSW to the next level as a regulator of cemeteries and crematoria across the state. This is an opportunity to lead the agency to become a strong and effective regulator benefiting consumers today, and to provide expertise and leadership that drives the NSW Government’s ambitious cemetery reform agenda. In this high-profile role, you will establish strategic relationships with stakeholders; provide expert advice to Ministers and across government; navigate challenging issues at the intersection of land use, science, religion, consumer protection, and business; and drive the performance of CCNSW. Following significant recent growth, the CEO has a unique opportunity to shape and develop a leadership team and agency culture that drives innovation in interment services. The provisions governing senior executive bands, contracts, remuneration, employment benefits and allowances under the Government Sector Employment Act 2013 apply to the Chief Executive Officer, but the role is otherwise not a Public Service employee. While experience in regulatory or compliance settings may be beneficial, what sets you apart is your ability to apply regulatory frameworks in a balanced, flexible, and outcomes-focused way—encouraging voluntary compliance and fostering collaboration over enforcement. You understand that regulation in this sector is about stewardship, guidance, and supporting continuous improvement.
